5/9/2006 - SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) -- An Air Force B-1B Lancer was heavily damaged during a landing at a forward operating location May 8.

The aircraft, with its crew of four, slid 7,500 feet before coming to rest on the runway with its landing gear in the retracted position.

All four crewmembers exited the aircraft safely.

The B-1B is deployed from Dyess Air Force Base, Texas.

The accident is under investigation.

Ok not so good. Lucky for the crew that they were unhurt. Are there also pictures of that accident?

I'm sure some of my Quality Assurance friends will end up with some pics. If I get them first, I'll post them up or E-mail them out.

Ever wondered if a B-1 with 4 people in it could make a wheels-up landing? Here's your answer and at Diego Garcia which has no crane or lifting gear to get it off the runway. Finally took a creative Chief and some big time jacks and they got it out of there. I don't really know but I'm guessing the aircraft weight as she sits there is around 400,000 lbs. The investigation is underway.

I would assume so. They should have a back-up escape plan on every jet (ie, the manual release and canopy breaker on the Hawg).

And is it just me or did someone remove the tail letters and flash on that bird?

look at the hatch on top. the pilot and copilot when they (eject) go thru a big hole that is blown over their heads but the other two crew members go out hatches you can see their escape rope.

live to wrench, wrench to live
