| Post subject: | recent CNN article |
Hi all, I don't post here much but I do read the board a lot. I am a nonmilitary guy who fell in love with the A-10s years ago at an airshow. Anyway, I was looking at a recent CNN story that talked about how the Air Force was saying that it needed more money to buy the Raptors (F-22s) as its fleet was aging. One AF guy called it the \"geriatric air force.\" They also noted the A-10s were becoming harder and harder to maintain due to corrosion and whatnot. Is that the case as I thought the \"C-upgrade\" was to improve the wings and the airframes as well as put in some new gizmos. Again, I am non military so I don't know all the terms. Anyone care to speak to this. btw, whoever did the recent side shots of the different squadrons, I loved it. Nice to see the nose art is still a factor for some units in this day and age. Andy |

Akravetz, sorry to say I don’t think people on this forum will talk about the issue of fleet health on this open forum. There are a number of on-going programs to both up-grade the Hawg and keep it flying as safely as humanly possible. Do a Google search on Precision Engagement and Service Life Extension Program (or Hog-up) to find publicly released info on these and other programs. |

My bad. I didn't see the previous post and I guess, looking back on it, that I should have realized it wasn't something to discuss in the open. still, I find it kinda interesting. Hate to think the A-10s might be rusting away. |

Dice, it's all open source. $2.5B program to buy new wings for 242 A-10s. This augments the initial repairs done by the Hog-Up program. |

Coach, not everything about the A-10 is open source. The CNN story talks about the A-10 as an airframe and mentions corrosion in that context, not in the context of PE or SLEP1. I didn’t want this thread to end-up being… yea we are having trouble here….and I’ve see corrosion here, taking it outside the two open source programs mentioned above. That’s why I told akravetz to Goggle the two programs which are open source and get his information there. I don’t care if PE and SLEP1 are talked about here but, I don’t want speculation on the health of the rest of the airframe ( that may or may not be an issue) which hasn’t been released publicly talked about here. That was my take on the thread. |

Sorry to have brought up a bad topic. I was just looking at that story and didn't realize all the mess that could come of it. Anyway, I got some of the answers I was looking for. Still wish they made two-seaters of those planes. I'd love to take a ride in one. |
