What does it mean to \"wet start\" a jet, is this an actual term?

If so, what does it mean, and what conditions would doing so create?

The closest I can think of for the A-10 would be trying to start the engines with the inverter off, filling them with fuel, and no ignition. What you have to do after this is motor them (like cranking the engine) with no fuel until it is dry, then do a normal start. If you just flip on the inverter, or attempt a start without motoring the engine, you will get a hot start, and a hell of a fire.

I don't believe it's an actual term Snipe, you won't find it in the dash 1. As JackB said, there are times when a \"wet start\" happens..usually the pilot doesn't get the expected results on the gauges, looks around the cockpit and notices the inverter switch. Now, if he's good, he'll just say \"oh darn\" (or something like that) and abort the start cycle. If he's a bonehead, he'll throw the inverter on thinking nobody will notice. Trust me, everyone notices a large white cloud consisting of vaporized JP-8 coming out of the engine..meaning everyone is also waiting to see balls of fire the size of basketballs bouncing around the ramp. Even if he successfully blows the fire out it's a guaranteed overtemp on the start. Either way, it's not going to make the block.

Then again, if he doesn't notice the inverter is turned off NEVER NEVER ask him about it prior to aborting the start...

Hey Goose our wing commander back in 86 did just that at oh dark 0300 at the Azores as we were launching him off to Turkey.

There is a thing refered to as wet motoring which usually required when maint is required on certain fuel components like when the fuel filter is removed or a new engine is ran on cell. It is common in the winter to start the APU with inverter off due to the cold and forget to turn it on upon engine start. It will sure be a attention getter.

Oh yeah,
after failed starts always make sure you motor the engine for at least a Minute Because when you look down and go \"Oh &&&&&&&&&&&$#@!!! you Forgot to \"Push the CB's in \" or you'll \"Get a HOT & DRY start!\".
