Pilot, plane land safely at Moody

VALDOSTA —
An A-10C with the Moody Air Force Base 23rd Fighter Group experienced an engine failure at 3:45 p.m. Monday, scattering pieces of the engine over the vicinity of Ray City.


The aircraft did land safely at Moody AFB without civilian or aircraft personnel injuries, according to a press release submitted by the Moody Public Affairs Office.

While there were no injuries, some engine parts fell from the aircraft during the incident, and minor property damage occurred. Individuals who have experienced property damage due to this incident may also contact the 23rd Wing Legal Office at 229-257-3414 for the processing of any claims.

“An interim safety board has been formed and we are expecting to convene a formal safety investigation board, which will have 30 days to complete their report,” said Lt. Col. Ed Lengel, 41st Rescue Squadron commander and interim safety board president. “We are unable to release any information on the cause or nature of this incident until all of the facts have been evaluated and a formal report has been issued.”

The cause of the incident is under investigation. Residents of the Ray City area are advised to not move or touch any fallen debris, but instead call Moody AFB Public Affairs immediately. A representative from Moody will arrive to map the part’s location to aid the safety investigation.

“We are trying to gather as many pieces of the engine as possible to aid in the safety investigation to try to reconstruct the events leading to the engine failure,” said Moody AFB Public Affairs Spokesman Tsgt. Parker Gyokeres.

Gyokeres advises the public not to touch or move any parts as the original order and location of how the parts fell is critical to the investigation.

“We need everything to accurately place this puzzle together,” said Gyokeres.

“We are committed to finding the cause and preventing further occurrences of this engine malfunction,” said Col. Kenneth Todorov, 23rd Wing commander. “To do this, we need your help with the investigation. If you locate any pieces, it is very important you not disturb them and notify us right away at (229) 257-3395 or (229) 257-2641.”

I know were ALL gateful the Pilot and Jet got home Safe ! But also no one was HURT on the GROUND!

Man if that would of happened, :( and you know how the media plays it up.

It wouldn't be the first time a A-10 lost an engine like that ,and it won't be last probably.

Hey it could be worse, like a \"C-5 Main tire falling into someones Living Room\" outside Dover AFB years ago.

No single pieces big enough to really hurt someone even if they got hit by it fell off this jet. But a metric shitload of small ones came off.

We had another \"incident\" last week. I don't have pics to post, but it's half a miracle the jet didn't become a smoking hole in the ground.

At least the Hawg has that second engine. When I was at DM in the late '70s, just as our unit was switching from the SLUFF to the Hawg, we lost an A-7D over Tucson, when it's engine flamed out. The pilot stayed with the AC so long that when he did punch out, he broke both legs when he hit. Though the AC killed 2 women when it landed on top of their car, the pilot did manage to miss hitting an elementary school full of kids. That would have been a real tragedy.

LOL, that's a good one Goose. Although any type of safety or down days would not have been able to prevent either of these, a regular day off would be nice. Everyone is working again this weekend, making it the 4th out of the last 5 we all come in.

I am sure I will catch some word through official channels on this one today, but you want to fill me in a little better at my .mil addy?

Glad to hear that everyone came out ok...any damage to the jet other than the engine and nacelle?

See that's why we use to have a \"Safety Day\" Down Day.
If we were having problems with lets say \"Engines\" we would open-up our Cowls and look everything over\" you never know, what you can find when you have \"The time\" to go that \"Extra Mile\" without pressure.

If your Not Deployed, their is no \"Reason\" to work 5 weeks straight, all that does is \"Create Bad Morale , Attitudes, bitterness, fighting, and the #1 reason
\"The I don't GIVE A FLYING F--- ANYMORE !!!\"


We didn't even have to work that many days straight (well most of the AMU) after Cornet Warrior III we got 7 days off, except for the \"Clean-up Crew \" which was by \"Volunteer only\" then you got your 7 days a week later. Then we had a \"Huge Coon Ass Party\" Crawdads, Beer, Oh, Man
Good times.

Deployed even during the \"War\" we got a \"Day of Rest\" every 11-14 days but you really were just \"Bored\" then.

So I don't \"Prescribe to the Work Them into the Ground Mode\" for seasoned troops who have already spent time in the \"Zone\" at Home.

Not good .

About twenty years ago one of Bradleys jets had a whole LPT assembly shear off over New York which in my expierence is proably the most coming of apart of a TF-34 that I can recall other the #1 bearing problem with the fan disc assembly.
