Got to Qatar toay. A few days to transfer the jets and should be out of the desert and into the mnountains by mid-next-week.

I got completely wasted in Lajes, good times. We even stayed off base, in the town Hermosia(spelling?). Nice place. Normally about a 30 minute drive from the base, I made the drive in a van from the town at the end of the valley the base it in to the hotel in 12 minutes. 8)

In Sig we had an engine change, so I worked on what was supposed to be our day off, but the C-17 was delayed 24 hours the next day so we had an extra day off. Nio more space on base, so we moved off base the extra night, and had the absolute worst directions EVER to the hotel in Catania. Every sinlge vehicle (10 I think) got soooo lost. Mine was the last to arrive, ~3 1/2 hours after we left. Talk about frustrating, but in hindsight it was funny and memorable. In hindsight.

I swear Italy has as many hot women as Israel does. I almost broke my neck it was spinning around so much. So I took a bunch of pics, They'll last longer, right :P

I'll post some pics and more news when I get a chance.

This very day last year I had just left the Deid and was stepping off a C-17 at Balad, Iraq. I don't know how it is right now, but last year when we stepped off on the ramp at al Udeid I started sweating...and didn't stop sweating for the 24 hours we were there. I took a combat shower just to make my sweat smell better.

Best of luck to you!

Each morning I walked to the shower blocks at AUAB it was too bright for my eyes so I stumbled to them until my eyes had adjusted, I couldn't do that for weeks/months on end.

Good luck to you jackb.

We got in to al Udeid last year around 21:00, went through PERSCO and got bunk assignments, showered and to bed about midnight. Our tent was so dark...it was very nice. First thing in the morning (actually about noon...I was exhausted from the flight and jetlag) my bladder was about to explode so I stumbled through the dark tent to the front door. When I stepped outside I swear I sunburned my brain through my eyes!!! The port o johns were only about 100 yards away but with one eye ever so slightly opened to try to see it seemed to take me forever. I don't believe I've ever seen daylight be so bright! It actually was painful.

Try August (1990 GW1) KFIA, No Ramp just a Signal taxiway White Crust all around , No Power in the Tents, No Showers, Pot-a-Potties that baked in 120F Temps and \"SAND BLOWING\" constantly until 16:00 when the wind changes everyday to the Gulf Breeze

And if you don't have Your Goggles (Green in) and sunglasses underneath them on, You would be \" Blinded\" for a few hours. Not FUN

Plus Water in Plastic Bottles stacked in the SUN to Drink for almost 10 days except for the \"Arab Food Hall\" you were out of luck!

So I can relate to the Feelings,

Plus If Billy can Go I want to Go To !, I'll camouflage my cane and every Crew Chief limps pretty much I'll blend in.

Just Watch your ASS Jack.

It's actually not so bad now Goose other than the heat and sun, of course I only spent 24 hours there getting staged to head to Iraq. Our transient tents were big and full of bunk beds, and had power and AC. There are trailers/modulars for the more permanent party folks. 24 hour chow hall with great food, a decent sized BX tent, movie theater, pool, and a 3 beer chit per day. :D Still had port o pots that were like ovens, but also had cadillacs with running water, showers, and flush toilets (and AC). There were still liter bottles of water stacked in the sun, but I'd go to the theater and grab cold ones out of their fridge.

I was kind of looking forward to coming back there on the way home, but ended up going ESTE and went straight from Balad to Moron Spain for 5 days. Much nicer! Had to spend an extra day or two there because of a hurricane last year on the US east coast...awwww. The \"pay as you go\" chow hall at Moron though messed me up the first time. I was used to eating for free as much as I wanted. I loaded up my tray and then got to the cash register...$15.00?!?!?

The only thing I recognize here is the mountains.
I am stunned at how much this place has changed since I was here with Eielson in 2006, and if you had told me this is what Bagram would like in 6 years back in 2002 I would have called you a liar. As soon as I get a better internet connection I'll be back here more regularly, and try to get some pics up.

I meant in terms of landscape coach, not the man made build-up. Unless, of course, it's green now. They were on a building frenzy when I left I '03.
