just read a comment on YouTube..

apparently every 3rd round fired from the GAU-8 is a blank to stop the aircraft from stalling!

They forgot about the part where they load that round BACKWARDS so that you get reverse-kick, helping to keep it from stalling...

I assume you all have seen this post on Wikipedia where it debunks that myth. Granted, y'all work with the planes but I am surprised someone would actualliy fall for that idea.

Interesting read about the recoil myth. I am amused about how that article states that gun gas NEVER reaches the engines. That would save us some time on ignition checks and water washes for sure!

Dirty Jets , Not Me Coach,

After a Day of Sorties, I wiped the \"Old Girl\" down! cleaned the wheels, struts, any smear marks and ABOVE ALL the \"TEETH\" .

I had my Ex send me my \"Wax\" cleaner over to the \"Sandbox\" so I could
\"Give The Old Girl a \"BRIGHT SMILE\" enough that the \"RAG's\" could see her
right before they met \"Death\".

After all the Jets were down and the work was done , If I didn't get her in my area I'd find her and make sure she was \"Tight\",wiped down, 781's had enough filled out etc...

I was \"ATE-UP\" and \"DAMN PROUD OF IT\".

Don't get me wrong, I loved seeing her \"Battle Hardened\" but also , my own feelings were \"A Pilot comes out to a Jet ,thats Cleaned, and everything in place\" was a sign that the Crew Chief \"Took Care of Their Jet\" and it was \"Ready\"

So that was the way I was taught as a \"Crew Pup\"

Goose I am taking this as you just being miss spoken (Like Clinton being sniped) PD 680 has been gone for years and it never was pushed thru motors. But like I said you ment to say (Gas Path) or maybe the (WD40) that I never seen used.

Its been 17+ years now since I worked on a Hawg, If it wasn't PD-680 (that is soap right?) it was something else because it made alot of \"FOAM\" coming out of the engine when you did your motoring.

So if it wasn't \"PD-680\" what was it then (80's)? Its been a long time. So whatever it was it was a \"F-ING MESS\"!

But we did go to wash rack and get buckets of \"Soap\" and hand wash the blades at times ,and before we did an engine trim if the blades were dirty.
Plus we used the same \"Soap\" during the War to clean the Blades after a Day of Combat sorties, looking at the TEMS data and the Fan Speed %.

I washed alot of Blades by hand , and then carried buckets of water up the \"Little Giants \" to Rinse it off .

And that isn't a \"Miss Spoken Sniper Story either, the # of the MIL Spec on the \"Cleaner\" I'm probably wrong on I'll concede to you, but towards the end their too we used that \"Citrus smelling Crappy Soap\" so enlighten me.

I want to be accurate .

We washed in Bagram in 2003-2004. We had a trailer with a pressure washer. I've got the pics on a disc at home. Not fun at all.

Although we did get a non-er to help wash!

Yeah, we used that pressure washer a bit too in 03. We didn't spend more than about 30 minutes on a jet, though. And after the nozzle broke off once and put a hole in a decel, we just made quick sweeps over the jet to get the excess dirt off and that was about it. I also don't recall having to due a single water wash while we were at Bagram. Our fan speeds stayed good the whole time, our engine guys figure it was all the dust having a sandblasting effect and keeping them clean.

We had to in the \"Sandbox\" wash jets, Mine and \"Rocky\"s(Paul) were the first ones and it was a \"Freaking Custer F---\" The tape stuck to the jets had to \"Scrub off the residue\" plus you had to do them in the middle of the night so the jet would be \"Cooled down\".

Then we had the \"Fights over Wiping down struts\" Should you or Should you not\"?

But during the \"Shooting War\" we had to clean the \"Fan Blades\" often, due to at least 4-5 Sorties firing the GAU, then later on the Jets flying threw the
\"Oil Well fires\".

Every little bit of \"Speed\" was needed, and there was always Engine washes going on .
