Boomer,

I believe in the Aurora program and have read the article at http://www.blackvault.com/militaryaircr ... story.html ... I believe the sighting by the former plane-spotter to be a credible one. What more can I say :-) I must admit that I am curious as to the further details of this situation... but instead of directly putting pressure on you to stipulate more information, I shall do it indirectly. I've heard of RBCC before, but never researched it thorougly... after doing so today I definitely believe that this is the sytem that powers the Aurora, very intruiging...especially with the capability of producing up to 500,000 lbs. of thrust. Thanks for the input.

Boomer: I haven't read the whole thread for a few weeks, so forgive me if these questions were asked already:

1) Where <i>exactly</i> were you when you took these pictures?

2) Did you notice any 'contrails' behind the aircraft? If you did, what did they look like? Doughnut-on-a-rope?

3) <i>If</i> you saw the contrails, why didn't you take pictures of them as well?

4) Why, if this jet "Aurora" is so secret, would they fly it in the daytime for people to take pictures of?

I've heard they fly it at night so people <i>couldn't</i> see it.

5) Are you totally confident that when/if the U.S. government reveal the Aurora to the public, it'll look <i>exactly</i> the same as the jet in your pictures?

Thanks in advance. <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

#1- in my back yard, which is in an open field directly under an AF(?) refueling/ACM zone,, I see KC-135s (or used too see them) practicing refueling with KC-10s, and with everything else(ok no F-111s RATZ!) with a hole to fill! I get B-1Bs through here several times a year, VERY fast, VERY low, VERY loud( as far as I know we're still cleared for low level nav training, used to see hogs all the time going over to Ft. Wood to use the gun range. And one year something dropped illumination flares over at the fort(beieve the media said that it was A-10s) man those are BRIGHT from 20 miles away!! The Air guard from several areas come down to practice ACM frequently, MOSTLY F-15s when you can actually SEE them (FREAKIN COMPASS GHOST PROGRAM!!!)But did see one fight between F-4s and 1 lonely A-7!! Also saw 2 MiL-24 Hind gunships come through something like 15 years ago!! LOL they stayed VERY low even for helos, I guess cause we wernt supposed to have them back then LOL. Seen B-52s,F-16s, McDonnell Douglas sends F/A-18s and F-15s here for thier shakedown flights after they roll off the assembly line. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

#2,3-Never saw no contrails.

#4- U-2 is black, U-2 flies in the daytime all the time. When you get up that high above 50,000ft(?) everything is a dark blue, even during WWII the high alt recon planes of the day were painted in darker colors, so it really depends on WHERE your flying out of more than when.

#5-I am TOTALY confident that when it is revealed it will have the FDL-8 shape, that's the only shape that we have good hypersonic data on going back to the X-24B lifting body program.

As I said once before, I believe the Aurora is real and that it was a failure in that particular configuration, and has been retired for several years now.

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote> And again, we had a jet that could mach 3+ in late 50's, early 60's: The SR-71 Blackbird!!! So who's to say 40 years later (ALOT can happen in 40 years) we don't have something like the Aurora, which people think can go mach 6+? Which is not illogical to think at all! <hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size=2 id=quote>

just want to point out what is easy to forget sometimes. Going fast even VERY fast is actually quite easy, the Marvelous Melons at Lockheed built the SR-71 which could hit at LEASTE Mach 3.4 35-40 years ago. We could EASILY produce an aircraft today that would travel at Mach 15-20! But the problem is finding something to build it out of that wouldent melt from atmospheric heating, wouldent ablate from the friction, and would still be structurally strong but light enough to fly( I suspect Aurora will be shown to be built largely out of Inconel) Composits can do much of what we need but there arnt any (as far as I know) autoclaves big enough to shape an entire body(Aurora is quite large). So we would have to piece it together from composit parts/panels, those panels would also have to be joined with materials "that wouldent melt from atmospheric heating, wouldent ablate from the friction, and would still be structurally strong but light enough to fly" the seams in those panels would also have to stand the tremendous velocity of the air rushing past without peeling away. So it's up to the pointy heads in the materials labs almost as much as the aerodynamisists to get a working hypersonic program going. Question is, have they already succeded? hmmmmm.....

Thank you for your reply.

I am still wondering why, if the Aurora is top-secret, would they fly it in mid-daylight near homes like yours, and risk having pictures being taken of it, as you show up above. ?

Wouldn't they fly it out at night to Area X (Wherever the new Area is for tesing classified airacraft)? Then I could understand them flying it in the day, but it'd be a seriously restricted area, not like Area 51, but some place we never even heard of.

There are 2 things I'd say about these photos:

1) These pictures are real, but the U.S. government doesn't know how to keep a secret (Which I doubt, since they kept the F-117 and B-2 well hidden) when it comes to classified top-secret aircraft.

2) These pictures are fake, and you know how to stir up a message board. LOL

------------------------------------------------------------

On the issue about having the technology to build a 'super-hypersonic aircraft' (That's what I'd call it) that could go faster than mach 6, up to mach 20-28, I'd guess it's possible as well. Couldn't they just make it out of space-shuttle material? Don't they go around mach 25-28? 20,000 mph?

boomer,

Yeah I know you were just screwing around, its cool<img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>. Anyway I haven't read sweetman's yet... with the amount of college classes I have, I may not be able to do so for a while. Thanks for the input on the pictures. I still don't understand why your pictures show the Aurora with its landing gear down though. If the aircraft was just transitioning through the airspace that is above your house (as you indicate in your first set of statements) then why would he be lowering his gear? Airframe stress-testing for the landing gear possibly? If you live near Whiteman its somewhat understandable... but if your out in the boondocks it doesn't make as much sense. As far as ScecOpsAlhpa's questions are concerned.. heres a few plausible situations I can come up with for a daylight transition.

1. Emergency landing, some kind of mechanical or systems failure.
2. Returning from Night mission (or some kind of high-atmoshphere test flight) in mid-morning or evening.
3. The Govt. is planning to release information on the Aurora soon, and has decided that night testing isn't as important as it used to be.
4. Various combinations of 1,2,and 3.

Answers? Cricisms?

An aircraft with the call sign "Stovepipe" was heard on scanners somewhere over Ft. Worth Dallas in broad daylight at more or less "High Noon" as I recall. I think it refused to answer the FAA controllers in the area even though it was having a problem.

I kinda forgot about this. Here is the full vesion of the article that I sent to Aircraft Illustrated ( thier final check came in the mail today). I told them to edit it as they saw fit so there is actually more here than they printed in the mag.

Where to start…? I guess I should start at the very beginning. I’ve been an aviation enthusiast all my life, as was my father. He hand built free flight gas engine model planes as a youth, then built the real thing when he worked for Curtis Wright. When World War II came, he enlisted in the U.S.Navy and was lucky enough to be stationed on board an aircraft carrier in the Pacific where he served untill the end of the war. He passed his love of aviation on to me. Like many boys, I built many plastic airplanes(and a few balsa wood flyers) growing up, and have continued to do so to this day. As with many modelers this hobby led to another, photography. The first challenge is to build a model that looks real, the second is to try and present it in a believable photograph.
Now with that background established, I’ll speak about this particular project. I have been intrigued by the world of so called “Black Aircraft” for a very long time. Bill Sweetmans books on stealth and the Aurora are like bibles to me, I find the technology involved to be totally fascinating! When Testors modeling company produced the “XR-7 Thunderdart” model I got one as soon as I could. While it was similar to the FDL-8 shape purported to be the base design of the Aurora, the top of the model was totally wrong so I began modifying it to more closely resemble the Aurora shape. When finished it bore a striking resemblance to several artworks of the Aurora model (mission accomplished!!). So naturally the next step was to photograph it. I didn’t have a ground area that I felt worked as an acceptable background, so I decided to do an “in flight“ photograph. Most of my models are hung from the ceiling of my home with a very simple bridle of monofiliment fishing line, so I just used this to hang it outside.
<img src="http://publish.hometown.aol.com/kaptor369/images/bridle.jpg" border=0>
I hung this bridle from another line strung between a ladder and a post. The camera was either my Minolta XG-7 or XGM 35mm SLRs, I had to use a wide angle zoom lens to get the pics I wanted because I couldent get far enough away with a standard lens. The model is probobly between 5 and 6 feet above the ground. I took a few pics from various angles, all from below to avoid buildings and vegitation that would ruin the scale. Once I took the pics, I put them in a refrigerator butter compartment, as this is a good place to keep film, until I could get them developed. There they stayed and were forgotten about (out of sight out of mind!). I don’t know for sure how old the pics actually are, but my records indicate I finished building the plane in October of 1994 so it should have been soon after that. I finally made a special effort to get the film developed in October of 2002. I had forgotten what was even on the film by then and actually figured that the film was long since ruined, and that developing them would be a waste of money, but I did it anyway! The first 3 or 4 pics on the roll were just imageless brown colored disasters, I figured “oh well” but then the next one was one of the Aurora pics and WOW it was great!! Many of the pics exibited a blotchy texturing ,but in the case of the Aurora pics it just gave them a “far away” look adding an artificial distance haze, PERFECT!!
I was so exited, I wanted to share them with my modeling/flightsim/aviation friends on the internet, so I scanned the best pics, cropped them (in the original pics the plane image is quite small) then compressed them to make them manageble for the internet posting, (that’s absolutely ALL I did to them), but my website was having problems so I had to E-mail them to some friends to post for me.
Once they were on the net, I got a little mischievous and decided to say as little as possible about the pics and just see what happened, my hard rule was that I wouldent fabricate any information although a little exaggeration would add some fun to it, I would tell the truth or say nothing, and that’s what I did. I had intended to let this run for about a week, but then an equally mischievous friend convinced me to let it ride since it was stirring up a lot of new interest in the whole Aurora/Black projects subject. I only posted them at 2 websites, but they began showing up everywhere (one site even atributed them to a Chinese website!!). So that’s the TRUE story of these pics. I am solely responsible for their existance but not for some of the outrageous things people have said about them. I have been facinated by people spotting “strings” that aren’t there, and proposing how the object was a freeflight Radio Controlled model. Only one pic has the line showing up at all ( I used a cropped version of that pic to highlight the bridle arrangement). Some of the pics exibit a verticle line or lines in the frame, I believe these are artifacts produced by the extended time in the fridge.

Mischievously Yours:

I'm not so sure about that...

http://forum.a-10.org/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1488

The famous WT Valentines Day Massacre!!!

The thread which led to the famous WT Road Trip 2001!!! With a total of 330 posts, Valentines Day Massacre is still up by about 44 posts, with this thread having "only" 286. (At time of posting)

And how about this one...

http://forum.a-10.org/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1358

The famous Tritonal and Tank Plinking thread. A thread which spanned over 15 pages and was WAY too dizzying for a normal person to follow. (But who said we here at the WT are normal in any sense of the word?) With 445 posts (compared to 286 and 330, with a lead of 159 over this thread, and a lead of 115 over the Valentines Day Massacre), this IS the longest thread in all of the WT history that I can access.

Hi
I know I'm posting months away from this funny topic..but who knows someone could read it.
If I had been there, I would have supported animatedclay from the very start...I'm wondering your age of all of you? Evidences were clear..anyway.
I want to point out to every participating people here (which makes
me think you're just kids...) that Mach6 isn't a dream boys..it's
done since the 60s by the rocket-plane X-15 ...loooooolllll
wake up there!
One "thought" here is PERFECTLY true with no doubt:
'Aurora is still an OOOOOlddd program'
otherwise everyone wouldn't be discussing about since 12 years! lol
A plane developping program is between 20-30 years (though in WWII, planes were developed shorter...say, 6-7 years).
I WON'T tell much about it caus I don't know much more but the uncle of a friend of mine is working for USAF. He said a "mystery" phrase,
