Not as a system. NVG Goggles only, I never used them in Fights as our goal was to Kill at BVR and if we went WVR it can cause severe Spacial disorientation. No depth perception etc. Water looks like Sky and the issues that effect the eyes during high g manuevers It will actually cause you to not see the Hud tape during aggresive manuevering. For these reasons a night time knife fight is a very bad situation to get in and is better to use tactics and break contact and allow another designated shooter take the enegagement at a extended WVR. Tight manuevering is a very big NO No.

Now the E does, provided the Lantirn nav pod is installed. to provide to the MFD repeater and NVG HUD but we still Flew NVG Goggles. On tanking I kept the backseater on NVG and I took them off at 10nm to give me time to adjust to the natural light, and the Refernce Lights on the Tanker. I left the 15's mid 90's. I dont believe any of the C's have upgraded to a night/Hud System. It would require a Pod to do so.

The flir is beneficial for spotting bandits up ahead. This how you spot ground targets at night and was how the F15E in WWGulf1 was able to Kill a Hovering MI28Hind at night with a GBU as it was transitioning to forward flight. THE AT pod is invaluable for much of this stuff, it can be used as a Forward looking Flir if Setup corectly of your flight path ahead

Their is regs Governing their use. For both types.

I asked a few folks here at depot today & as far as they know, no C models have been "upgraded" for NVGs....

Their is no Cockpit light mod for the C for NVG Goggles. However it doesnt prevent you from useing them as their are dirty tricks for their employment use.

In Snoozed engagements, it is nice to have the ability to pick out lights or burner cans 100nm of miles away. Intercepting aircraft etc.

It was a neccesity over the water were we did our patrols, as we had several unfriendly nations in my squadrons region <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Could you employ a LITENING or LANTRIN as a pseudo IRST for the air to air role on an enemy fighter if need be.

(note: discussing F15E-F16 Here)
Yes with the ATflir, but it doesnt work as well as a True IRST. When i worked on the Falcon eye project, We tried differnt types of seekers. The block 60 is the closure of it.

Ive done this in both the Mud Hen and Blk50 16. The lightning and sniper pod would work better as they have a more advanced contrast and IR logic in them, than the 20 year old lantirn.

We simply boresighted the Atflir to the Datum line of the ac and then adjusted it to AOA. This was beneficial if you wanted to datalink in to a target. Which we did with great success over water and really helped in refueling activities, Its nice to beable to visually see what a target is doing in aspect as you approach.

The Night A2a Helo Kill was done in this manner. they took it down lowlevel boresighted it off the nose, as the contact location was not Static. they picked up the target, lased, poped up and dropped the GBU right through the Helo and came around with Mk82's or Cbus to finish off the area.

You would actually have a better snap to with a Mav than a POD just do to the way they are designed.

The best use to Ir and any Ir type employment is getting a cold back drop to the target. Whcih means its better to get them against a cold sky. With Pods that are typically below Airframe this makes it more so difficult. With the F16 it is better becasue it is attached to the Nacelle. But this also means you have to off azimuth to tat side and could lead you into intercept geometry problems (Crank-Notch)

What im saying here is that. The engagement Zone and the tactic is weak for a hostile target.

What the atflir pod will do for you is help you cehck out a target like an airliner or cargo plane at distance etc. It would not be good to use in a ACM type enviroment.

Its more of a "Trick of the Trade" than a purpose built system.
