(note: discussing F15E-F16 Here)
Yes with the ATflir, but it doesnt work as well as a True IRST. When i worked on the Falcon eye project, We tried differnt types of seekers. The block 60 is the closure of it.
Ive done this in both the Mud Hen and Blk50 16. The lightning and sniper pod would work better as they have a more advanced contrast and IR logic in them, than the 20 year old lantirn.
We simply boresighted the Atflir to the Datum line of the ac and then adjusted it to AOA. This was beneficial if you wanted to datalink in to a target. Which we did with great success over water and really helped in refueling activities, Its nice to beable to visually see what a target is doing in aspect as you approach.
The Night A2a Helo Kill was done in this manner. they took it down lowlevel boresighted it off the nose, as the contact location was not Static. they picked up the target, lased, poped up and dropped the GBU right through the Helo and came around with Mk82's or Cbus to finish off the area.
You would actually have a better snap to with a Mav than a POD just do to the way they are designed.
