Don't know if this will be much help, but DHL won't give us chains for our econoline vans(inside stripped except 2 seats and a steering wheel so the ass end is VERY light when empty), so What I have found is, depending on the tranny settings with the computer, some cars if you put it in 2nd, will start you out in first anyway, just not let you get past 2nd. But some will start you out in second gear, that would be best, as stated before. But one other thing, when you are trying to slow down/stop, put her in NEUTRAL!! That way your brakes aren't fighting the engine torque. Also, not sure how much snow driving you are used to, but if you are breaking, and your tires lock and you start to skid in the wrong direction, let up momentarily on the brakes and you will be able to at least steer, to get pointed back in the right direction. Then brake a little more till you start sliding, and repeat.
Hope that helps, if not, ignore this and I will just shut up now....
