This happend 2 days ago (Tuesday) to one of our jets from Moody (We are TDY at Nellis right now).
The gun \"blew up\" in flight, and the pilot IFE'd to Edwards. The damage is surprisingly little considering what happened. The only damage to the jet is the antennas on the aft fuselage, the vent mast, vertical stab lowers and rudders. That's all. (oh, and the gun too)
I will wait until more info is released or time has passed before I post more details.

Once again, a prime example of the forethought of the designing engineers!

Unbelievably small amount of damage for a gear-up landing! Just one more reason to love the hog!

I'm sure the pilot is grateful, too! I would hate to try that in a lawn dart!!!!

What i always thought. The wheels of an A-10 are so build that it always can be used by bad landings after a hit or other problems. Other planes like F-16, F-15 and others has the wheels complete in the the plane. When they have a bad landing, they land really on the plane itself, the Warhtog has than wheels for a \"easier\" touch down. Is that correct or not?

Hard to see in the pic, but are those wheel chocks on the right side in case the plane starts rolling?

I saw that same thing happen in the 80's, The gun had a round explode in the chamber,

He went for the \"Gear up landing\" they foamed the 1st half of the runway, and when he landed, He \"Slid\" thru the foam all the way down to EOR and If you didn't know any better Taxied it into \"De Arm\".
The Jet turned right into the area.

Dice, didn't I give you a copy of that Video, from \"Mack\" he taped it plus the damage that it caused. Basically \"Chewed-up Tail skids\"(bottom of stabs) and antennas ground down to nothing.

Not that I recall Goose, I would remeber something like that.
Dutchy, you are correct. ws2ws10, I wouldn't think the aircraft would roll or tip from side to side, don't known why the chocks are there.

How come the DRA didn't pop? I'd have thought he'd hit the emergency jettison, and drop everything.

He did punch everything- the rocket pods, flare pods, mavs, and bombs. The DRA is uncarted and safety wired. The only things we ever fly like that are DRA's, ECM pods, Lightning pods and travel pods.


If we could go ONE NIGHT without something happening, I will die a happy man. That's all I want, one night when the S doesn't hit the F.


They were getting really strong winds at Edwards, up to 50 knots.

LOL the high rez pic shows what a piece of junk the mighty GAU-8 turned into, either from the failure or the landing, just a jumble of parts lol.

How could the landing have done THAT to the gun? I would guess the malfunction of the gun would have caused it....

Wow! The gun is a mess. I really wonder what happened there, gun malfunctions usually show up at the other end. I'm thinking someone in the gun shop may be \"sweating bullets\" on this one. I have never seen one come apart at the muzzle.

Could mean some serious airframe damage if the gun rotation did some damage to the front end of the jet before the pilot got off the trigger.

The bullet pattern must have been awesome to watch on the ground!

If I am not mistaken isnt the one on the pedastal at DM the same one that sheared off both mains on a touch and go about 30 years ago and had to belly in after flying around for a while waiting for the engineers decided what course of action to take.

WOW!, Ours didn't look like that, it did \"internal damage\" basically the \"Breach\" blew-up from the round getting hung-up.
Thats what I was told. I'll have to ask Carl about that.
But it \"Jammed\" the nose gear into place so it wouldn't extend.

No. The one at D-M landed short of the runway on a deployment sortie from Myrtle Beach to George AFB for an Air Warrior det back in the 1987 timeframe. It resulted in some new rules regarding landing procedures when flying with tanks.

The one you're talking about happened at England AFB in the early 90's. That one resulted in the pilot getting to make a video for all the pilots in ACC to watch about priorities and not losing your temper while flying.

So how would you recover the plane? Do you send a crew out to lift it with a crane, fix the gear to put it down, then tow it in normally?

Yeah, they lifted it with a crane, pulled the emergency gear handle and towed it away.

Coach then this must have happened twice because when I was told about this incident back when we were converting from the F-100 to the A-10 in 1979 it was from a General Electric Tech.Rep. by the name of Dale Winters or a Fairchild Tech. Rep. by the name of Bob \"Tiger\" Stevens.

Do those names ring a bell with anybody out there

It's been a long time, but Bob Stevens may have been one of the tech reps at Bentwaters when I was there '82-'84. At least the name seems familiar.

I know the feeling of wanting just one decent night. In the meantime, though, I'd like to hear a few of these stories. I know I have seen a lot of flight control removal and cones up on you guys' jets. Would love to hear exactly how you guys ended up changing a disco while TDY too!
