A Change in Plans: Lingering concerns over wing cracks on some A-10s have caused the Air Force to modify its plans to send an A-10 unit to South Korea in March on a rotational deployment to relieve Army Apache attack helicopters there. Instead, the service will dispatch a contingent of 12 F-16s in their place, US Forces Korea said in a release Jan. 13. The decision to send the F-16s is \"due to increased requirements for inspections and repairs to the A-10 fleet,\" USFK acknowledged. Remember, it was last October when the Air Force grounded a sizable portion of the A-10 fleet due to wing cracks on those airframes with comparatively thinner skinned wings. As of the end of last year, many of these A-10s had not been cleared to return to flight. Briefing reporters earlier this week, Lt. Gen. Norman Seip, commander of 12th Air Force and Air Forces Southern, said repairs on these A-10s should be complete by June. (AFPS report on his comments) USFK said the F-16s will arrive in South Korea before the Apaches depart to ensure \"no gap in capability exists.\" USFK announced last November that the Apache unit, the 1-2 Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, would re-station to Ft. Carson, Colo., as part of a realignment of US forces on the Korean peninsula.

They're saving the Hogs for the real war. They are letting the LGPOS guys get some shopping in while we do the shooting.

At least they aren't changing in favor of a UAV...but apparently those days aren't far behind. :(

From this article:

Quote:
Air Force Lt. Gen. Norman Seip this week said the service is \"all in\" when it comes to developing unmanned systems and aircraft.

\"Next year, the Air Force will procure more unmanned aircraft than manned aircraft,\" the general said. \"I think that makes a very pointed statement about our commitment to the future of [unmanned aircraft] and what it brings to the fight in meeting the requirements of combatant commanders.\"

Seip said the Air Force currently has 85% of its unmanned air force deployed in Southwest Asia operations and 15% stateside to train pilots and for operational test and development. The Air Force is doing all it can to speed up the UAS pilot training process, he added.

Man, you should've seen all the UAV monkeys where I work. It was a damn convention or something.

Coach,

I think you hit it on the Head, they are needed in other areas \"Desperately\" and the others time to get their \"Updates\".

They'll be needed.

At least in my eyes it's just related to ongoing large-scale A-10 groundings due to wing cracks. See: http://warthognews.blogspot.com/2009/01/instead-of-10s-f-16s-now-selected-to.html

Hope that helps.

I was being sarcastic...you can read between the lines and figure out why they are doing what they are doing.

I was being actually serious .I got the meaning but the A-10's need the \"Down time\" not only for the repairs but for some of these \"BRAC\" units to get their ASS IN GEAR.

This goes back to the days of the Strut replacement. The time it took to get them, was made up by \"Units\" of Seasoned Troops who knew what they were doing and the \"Importance\" of the matter.

If you have people who are \"Not Breathing,Bleeding,Sweating and Eating Warthog\" the process will be slow and actually \"despised \" by in cases by their new keepers.

Plus the Lawndarts going to to ROK, seems more of a \"Training more in CAS \" plus having them close by for the Push in Afgannyland

That's just my OP.

Which is why BRAC is a piece of $4!+.......there were and still are great units out there which completely love and embrace the Hog.......yet they will lose the jets and new units get them which not only takes time to get 'into' the A-10 training wise and for some, by actually 'liking' the airplane. 'Guess since it doesn't go fast means it's crap' seems like an attitude some take.......

Going from the \"Hotels to Tents\" and to the label \"USAF Grunts\"
isn't for everyone.

If they look at it as a \"Demotion\" then it was a waste of time and money and a loss of 1000's of \"Good Folks\" who loved their jobs and years of experiance on the Warthog.

If it isn't BROKE DON'T F-WITH IT!

Matt,

That was tossed around in the very late 89 and 90 time frame and if it wasn't for DESERT STORM it probably would of happened after they worked out the \"Early Agreements\" when the USAF was made a Branch in 1947 taking away Air Power from the Army.

I think if they ever get some of these Units into \"Action\" with their A-10's and see what they can do , they might change their mind then.

The Older A-10 Pilots in these new Units (BRACS) and like Billy said the guys that left there to go to them how they're treated would be a \"Downer\" loss of words.Like \"Red Headed Step Kids\"

I'm not a Fan of the Lawn Dart but I had to work around them for a short time, and if I was sent to a F-16 unit, We'll now I'm a \"Lawn dart Keeper\" and would do my job, just like most everyone else would do.
But I had already worked on 7 differant Aircraft like most of the \"Old Dawgs\"

The Aircraft ,the Mission of the Aircraft and the Pilots of that Aircraft are the \"ONLY JOB\" you worry about. Bitching and Moaning is a \"Right of every one\" but you do your job.

So give the \"Old Warthog, wing cracks and all\" a Chance, it's like any Jet. Treat her \"Good\" talk \"Nice\" and She'll take care of you.

And Who Ever has 80-0166 treat her \"Good\" or Billy and Goose will Haunt Your ASS!!!!
