I know I haven't been around much, but I got a question that hopefully some of you can answer.

I got laid off on the 25th of September from my job at Nellis (funding :roll-eyes: Anyway, I found out I was selected for a GS position. I managed to get them to move me from Step 1 to Step 5 or 6 (I haven't gotten the paperwork yet). Well, my question is, does anyone have any idea how long I am going to be waiting? It's been about a month and my paperwork is still waiting on someone's signature. Being laid off in Las Vegas isn't the greatest thing in the world right now, and I'm tempted to head down to Phoenix temporarily to find some work (we have family there). I'm just sick of the waiting. The job sounds awesome, and I really can't wait to get in there. But man this is taking forever (it seems).

Sorry...no real answers for you. There is no specific waiting period for a GS job. I would suggest asking whoever it was that told you about the position if there was any news. I would be persistent (but not pushy). Might be just typical guvmint red tape and delays.

If a security clearance is involved, that could slow things down.

Yes. But being that Las Vegas is the #1 city for unemployment, it took me until last Friday to get through the 190 phone lines (I couldn't do it online due to wages earned outside of NV in the last 18 months).

Yeah, there is a clearance involved. I already have what they are asking for so they just have to adjudicate it (I have no idea why they can't just look it up in JPAS, but then again...).

Well, I got my tentative offer letter on Friday. GS-11 Step 6 with full promotion to GS-12.

I'm in Phoenix right now, and I have to go to the local PD for fingerprints so they can do the \"reciprocity\" paperwork to change my clearance from DoD to DHS. I'm hoping that doesn't take forever.

Hope all goes well from here on out, and I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you.

GS-12 is Pretty good Still Right?

My Ex-Sister-in -Law retired as a GS- Sonething or what the Eqvilant of an \"O-6\" would be in the Army. Head of saftey for a Divison in Germany then back to Ft HOOD , where she retired. She had a 2 star and Her and a Major in her Office and were incharge of the \"saftey \" programs , She would have to wear BDU's on certain TDY's with the Divison etc...

She Just about ended up in the \"Sandbox\" in 90-91 , but Retired instead.
But had 35 years in.

We use to Have \"DV\" Mission in our \"Double Knit\" Flight Suits\" for GS-GODS when I was in MAC in TWA. Blue Plaque in the Window, Head Rest Covers etc...... All the Dog and Pony Show Crap.

Weasel you get that High up , Make sure You get your Own \"Jet \" assigned to you for a month. And go visit all of us \" Little people.

Goose, GS-12 is still good, depending on your locality pay a 12 tops out at $103,710 (San Fran/Oakland area).

A GS-12 here at Robins (with locality) tops out at $87,893, I looked but couldn't find if locality at Nellis is different than Robins, I would think so but who knows.

Well, the job is in Bothell, WA. Pretty much Seattle so 11/6 is roughly $71,500. I'm not sure how promotions work in the GS world, so I'm assuming after a year I'll be a 12/2 which puts me at roughly 76K.

I'm still waiting on my official start date. I'm hoping mid-January because I really doubt they'll ask me to start on 4 Jan.

Good on ya Weasel. You are about to enter the complex world of the GS employee so be careful about info you're given from other people. As to \"within grade step increases\", this is how it works; Steps 1-4 take a year, 5-7 take two years, and 8-10 take 3 years. Those are times between steps so it takes 19 years from step 1 to step 10, at least in theory.

At some point, you'll be given the opportunity to buy back your military time. I did because it was worth it but I'm 5 days older than dirt and was pretty low in the Wage Grade system when I did it so it was cheap. As a GS11/12, you need to do the math carefully, it will be expensive.

Yeah, I read that about the in grade step increases. I'm wondering how the promotions work. I went up to Seattle back in October to house hunt (not knowing that it was going to take this long, but it was free) and on the flight up, I sat next to a FAA GS guy. He gave me some pointers and told me that when you are promoted, you don't go all the way back to Step 1. I forget what he said, but it was something about being promoted and not losing money. Like I said, it was in October and a lot has happened since then.

Not sure how GS compares to me, but I'm a full time ANG Technician at WG-12 step 3 right now. Makes me around $45-50k a year which isn't too shabby for Indiana. If it works the same, once you gain a step you don't lose it. If I were promoted tomorrow to WG-13, I'd still be step 3.

As far as promotions, still not sure about GS situation, but for me I'm slotted in a WG-12 position. I can't leave WG-12 unless the Governor or TAG says we could open up higher slots, and then I'd have to apply for an upgraded position. I was a WG-10 while in Iraq in '07 and had to apply for a WG-12 slot that opened while I was there (which I got). I only can get the yearly or so step increases and COL percentage upgrades (usually same as mil...2-3%).

Cool thing though, I have two CACs. One for civilian and one mil since I have to be ANG for my job. When I go TDY as a technician, after work I can take of my TSgt uniform and head to the O'Club if I want. ;)

It's 0430 (don't ask), I'll try and be lucid with my explanation. Lets say you're hired at the GS11 grade starting at a step 5 which pays $56,991 per year. The between step increase is $1676, that's the amount your salary increases with each step but in this case an irrelevant number. You then get promoted to a GS12. The GS12 step you start at is whatever step that pays MORE than $56,991. In the case of a GS12, step 1 is $60,274 so that's where you would start.

For Weasel Keeper, the Wage Grade world is an entirely different animal. Your wages are established by the prevailing wages in your geographical area. A WG12 in Indianna does not make the same as a WG12 in Kansas who doesn't make the same as a WG12 in Nevada. Hell, it's not even the same pay within the same state for the same job. Just depends on your particular wage area.

And people wonder why it costs so much to run the government.

Well, I'm part of the group now. I got my \"EOD\" today, January 17th. I have to be up there in 2 weeks. Good thing all our stuff is in a storage unit in Las Vegas while we are in Phoenix.

Still haven't planned the drive. Dice, if we come through Utah, I plan on making the SLC area our stop. I still have your number but I'll give you some advanced warning when we decide our route to Seattle.
