My wife Emma had a major stroke today at the age of 39. It was a blood clot in the left forward side of her brain and she was air-lifted to a stroke center in Salt Lake City. She's in pretty bad shape and the next 72 hours is going to be critical. She is resting the best she can and she will be getting an MRI tomorrow to determine the extent of the damage to her brain.

I'm posting this because I'm here in Salt lake City away from mine and her family and kinda alone except for my kids and friends I've made here. I've always felt this is sorta my home away from home and may use this forum to post to help me get through this. I'm doing OK so far but it looks like it may be a long road...

Please include Emma (and my family) in your prayers and I'll keep you guys and gals posted on how things are going. Going to get some rest now because it looks like it's going to be a long day tomorrow.

Dice-man, that is terrible news. I wish you and your wife good luck and a good recover. Take care on yourself and over your wife and kids.

My sincerest sympathies to you and your family Dice. My prayers go out to your wife, to you and to the kids. It hopefully goes without saying that if you need anything at all, just give the word.

Dice,

My Dad had a major stroke in 1992 and I'm going to visit him this weekend in Florida. Keep the faith, good things happen to good people.

Not much to update, they have her on meds to help with brain swelling. The stroke hit her hardest in the part of the brain which process speech so so she can't talk and she's having trouble understanding speech as well. She will be in the ICU a few more days.

Not much we can do but wait and see how much she can come back in the next month or so. depending on how much of the speech recognition she can recover will depend on if she can go to therapy or if she will have to be put in a nursing home.

She can stand (but week) and does/can fallow hand commands so we are hopeful. She has recovered a bit over the weekend because at first she just was not \"here\" if you know what I mean. Yesterday I think she was starting to understand me and had some recognition in her eyes.

I'm going to work today because I'm low on leave and there is really nothing I can do just sitting in her room. I also need to work-off some nervous energy and save the leave I have for when I really need it.

Thanks everyone for your well wishes and prayers, I'll keep yall updated as time goes on.

Joe,

It sounds \"Bad:\"but Her being able to even stand Is a Great sign. We'll just keep on Praying that over the next few weeks The Brain will start to re-wire and form new neuro passages.

She;sYoung that makes a big differance

Sorry to hear about this and sorry I didn't pick up on this sooner, but I was out of state.

My Father had a brain hemorrage when I was a year old in 1960. He too was only in his late 30's. He'd spent the next 4 years at Walter Reed recovering. This is going to be a long recovery for her and you and the kids. I'll be keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers.

All my best,

sorry I'm late on this too, been my first hit on the WT page for a bit....
So sorry to hear Dice...
Her age will help. When my daughter had bleeding in her brain, they said that age has A LOT to do with recovery ability, so her being young (my age, actually) should give you some hope there. At any rate, keep your head up, man. This will be tough, but could help you grow closer to her than you ever were...she will need you now more than ever. Make her proud! And us!!
Take care, brother! Prayers sent aloft!

Joe, I don't know how you feel, but I do know how to pray. May he grace, comfort and understanding of Almighty God give you the kind of peace and support today that will allow you to make it through one more day. Whenever m family and I pray alone or together, we will entreat God with you.

Joe,

I'm hoping for the best in your wife's recovery.

As far as leave, are you eligible for Family Medical Leave? i now I get 80 hours a year as a GS, not sure if you have the same provisions, but it's something to look into. If you need someone to talk to, I'll pm you my number.

You know that we are all here for you and yours.

-Jake

I just have a min and I will post more later but, things are looking a lot better, Emma is out of ICU and in the rehab wing. She can speak a little and understands language. The danger of brain swelling is past and her life is no longer in danger.... for now. Looks like your thoughts and prayers may have helped.

Again guys/gals I only have a min so, Emma contunes to improve but, we have a long recovery road ahead. She's going to be in the rehab wing of the hospital for three weeks and then be evaluated on whether she can come home or not.

Weasel and Hawg, thanks for the offer but I'm trying to do this one on my own. I have almost two weeks leave and I'm working for comp time on the weekends while Emma's in the hospital so I will have more when I need it later on. If things get out of hand and I need help I will ask.

Please keep Emma and my family in your thoughts and prayers because this is not over by a long shots but, it is getting better little by little.
