I believe the reason for the APU deflector was to lower the possibility of post shutdown fire from residual fuel in the left engine when restarting the APU. Could be wrong...it also may have been purely cosmetic when they switched to the gray paint.

In other words...I don't know.

Not too sure how a small lip deflector would minimize post shut down fires. Not even sure the small deflector would shoot the APU guts to the ground if it grenaded. I'm sticking with the other explanations...to keep soot off the cowl/cosmetics. :) At Hill AFB when I launched one out Thursday in 0F weather, it didn't seem to deflect much of anything. I stood about 15 feet from it to keep warm and it seemed the exhaust hit me just fine to keep me warm as if it didn't even have a deflector. ;)

The deflector deflects the hot exhaust away from the fuel drain at the bottom of the nacelle.

Actually most are aimed down and aft of the jet in the direction of the sump drain....

It makes sense...but the deflector is so small that to me it doesn't really do much of anything. Like I said before, standing about 15 feet left of #1 I was getting the full hot blast of exhaust from the APU to keep warm. Maybe it deflects just enough to stay clear of the fuel drain...I don't know...heh. Good discussion!

The TO was very conservative when it came to what degree it was angled down. We would usually rotate it a bit further to help out the crew chief and try and keep the #1 engine nacelle a little cleaner. The turbine failures is a old issue that I believe was fixed by a replacement turbine design.

The only reason I've ever know for the deflector was to (as Coach said) prevent post-shutdown fires from fuel drains out of the #1 when the APU wasn't shut down before #1, although I'm not sure of its effectiveness given the procedures we had to follow for shutdown.

As possible further evidence of this, whenever I shut down #1 before the APU (extremely cold weather up north, having to leave it running for mx, etc.), the crew chief would stand by with the fire extinguisher until #1 drained, but would not do so with #2 when the APU was running.

During normal ops (red ball, etc.), if #1 required shutdown, we would have to shut down the APU, shut down #1, restart the APU.

Didn't have them in the old days boys they came out so during an emergency restart it would not ignite the fuel from #1 engine at shutdown
