I was scrubbing my A-10 list today and ran into a slight problem! <img src=icon_smile_shy.gif border=0 align=middle> I show two aircraft at Langley AFB and knew they only had one, which they are getting ready to put on display in the airpark.

I called to get the tail number from them and guess what, they told me they had...79-223...this is imposable because this aircraft is still flying with an active unit! After checking a little more I find the aircraft at Langley has EL on the tail with code of 79-223.

What I belive happen is 79-223 (which is still flying) got damaged in DS and had it's tail section changes with one from another aircraft, now the old tail is at Langley on a different fusalage.

My question is (Goose) anyone remember the tail being changed on 79-223 during DS and if so where (tail # would be nice) did the "new" tail come from. <img src=icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle>

Looks like I have a litte more work to do on my list...<img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle>

Dice, I remember we did have a tail change on one during DS, I want to think it was 186, and 79-223 comes to mind. It ispossible that it also had a tail change, but keep in mind I have slept since then and a few more hairs have left my head.

DICE ,0186 DID HAVE A TAIL CHANGE BUT IT CAME OFF A 706TH BIRD HENCE,"THE EL NO OR NO-EL "JOKE ME AND MAC HAD EARLIER
IS IT
80-223 OR 79-9223?
OR AS WE CALLED THEM THE "TWINS" BOTH RED SECTION 76TH B FLT BIRDS
SO IF 79-9223 IS FLYING THEN IT COULD BE 80-0223 OR ONE LAST POSSIBLITY

DO THEY STILL HAVE THE A-10'S ON DISPLAY AT EAFB HERTIAGE PARK?
MAC DID THEY GET RID OF ONE?
BECAUSE I THINK THEY HAD PUT 79-9223 ON THE TAIL EVEN THOUGH IT WASNT FOR DISPLAY SAKE

Goose both 223's (79/80) are still flying, the aircraft at England AFB park is 73-1667, the fourth DT&E aircraft built.

Goose I've found the aircraft at Langley is YA-10A 71-1370 the second test aircraft built. The tail is from 79-223 which took damage during DS but finnished the war and was replace after getting back to England AFB. So the display at Langley will be 71-1370 with 79-223's tail. This is no big deal I guess but, the first two YA-10's (71-1369 nad 71-1370) have different tails than the production aircraft, they well a bit larger and had the flat stab caps!
So the display at Langley will not reflect a "true" YA-10A but a hybrid prototype/production A-10...your trivia for the day! <img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle>

Dice,

I was going through my pic collection and found three of door art if you want 'em. I didn't write down what aircraft they were from, but I'm sure you can figure it out if you see 'em. You prolly already have a couple of 'em.

Goose I don't know for sure the damage happen during DS (still looking into it) but the tail was changed when the aircraft was still stationed at EAFB because the 23rd tail code is still on it today.

WP had two A-10s, YA-10A 71-1370 (moved to Langley) and 78-0681 which is paint in the 23rd colors. Aircraft are moved all the time IE 205 from Eglin AFB FL to the AFA and 370 from WP to Langley...see how a (my) book would help everyone out! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Ok, I'm confused (well...more confused than normal, anyway). Is there still two Hogs at the Air Force Museum? The last time I was over there (about 1 1/2 years ago) there was, and the one outside was the prototype.

Dice, do you know when they moved 71-1370? Or is that the one that that used to be at the AFM? (see, I'm still confused! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>)

OK now Ted listen closly... The AFM at Wright-Patterson had two A-10s, one YA-10A 71-1370 and A-10A 78-0681. The YA-10A 71-1370 was moved (about 8 months ago) to Langley AFB VA to be placed on a stick in the airpark.

For some reason 71-1370 didn't have a tail section so the AFM shipped a tail from 79-223 which still has the tail code EL for England AFB painted on it. But wait, 79-223 is still flying with an active duty unit so the tail at Langley must have been removed from 79-223 for some reason and shipped with 71-1370. Or did the AFM paint the tail of 71-1370 to look like an active duty A-10 and put 79-223 on it? Do you remember how it was painted when you saw it?

The only A-10 left at the AFM is 78-0681... now do you understand?

<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size=2 id=quote>

It may be that they arbitrarily put 9223's tail number on a display aircraft.

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>

Not that I recall. I don't believe anything major happened to 9223. 0186 was the only one that had a tail change, and it got it's tail off an NO bird, tail #540.

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>
My question is (Goose) anyone remember the tail being changed on 79-223 during DS and if so where (tail # would be nice) did the "new" tail come from. <img src=icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle>

The only tail change I know about was 80-0186, Col. Sawyer's bird. And it got it's tail from a Cajun bird (NO on the tail code), tail #540.

79-9223 is definitely still flying, or at least it was. I've seen photos of it in the air since they closed the base down and moved the wing to Pope.

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>

<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size=2 id=quote>

Yes, it's still on display. Sooner or later, I'll get the photos I took on my last trip to the base scanned and posted, but the A10 is still flying at Heritage Park.

No, the tail number on the one on the pole is the original tail number: 73-1667, if I remember correctly. It was like the fourth DT&E bird built.

Here's a link to Pat's World with a list of the A10s that had ABDR during Desert Storm, or were lost.

Well I guess we may never know why the number 79-223 is on the tail at langley. I've got PA (no not who you guys think) taking a picture of the tail so we can see if we may be be figure out if it's the orginal tail or just painted to look like 223.

All I really care about is the main airframe at Langley is 71-1370 and I know <b>both</b> 79/80 223's are still flying. Thanks for all you guys/gals help and I'll let you know how this ends.
