I show 71-1369, the first YA-10A as crashed and as I remember this is the aircraft in the now famous ejection sequence flimed from a chase plane. I have a copy of the ejection but the quility is so bad I can't verify this is 369.

Anyone have a book, or better quility tape and can tell me no sh#t, this is 71-1369 which crashed, as I remember while testing the GAU-8A?

BTW If you can't see the tail number look for the flat lower stab caps, as I remember only 369 and 370 had these.

Ugly but well hung!

Dice, I've got a book that has a series of pictures of a pilot punching out of an A-10. I think it might be the one you're talking about. Most of the pics are cut off just behind the engines, but the very front edge of the stabs are in one pic. The lower cap is rounded in that pic. I'll scan it on Monday and send it to you.

Goose not the Paris Air Show I know which plane crashed there killing the test MR. Nelson, I'm talking about the ejection (most of the time seen in slow motion)and the slow dive of the aircraft to the desert floor where it explodes.

Dice, my life support shop keeps a good copy of that video for life support training. I'll take a look at it when we get back to work on Tuesday and let you know if I find anything.

Hi guys...........long time, no post.
The Hog you speak of in the ejection pictures was 73-1669 the final pre-prod ship.
Major Rusty Guideon was pilot when both engines stalled during gun gas trials in 1977 or 78?
My reference was a Warbirds Illustrated book No.40 called A-10 Thunderbolt II (apologies to any pilots reading that title)!! and the author was Dana Bell. I have a Serial Directory listing 73-1669 as lost on 08/08/77 but the book says 78.

No ted, with Bacon bits info and what I've learned (and you saying round tips) I think we can rule-out this aircraft being 71-1369. I will keep looking on my end and let you guys know what I find.

Bacon Bits has the right info. Both prototype YA-10's survived their flight test lives. One of them (1369 ?) had a landing incident and ran off the runway during the fly-off. The gear collapsed but it was repaired. Both of them (1369 & 1370) were used to get flight test data while the DT&E jets (73-1664 thru 1669) were being designed. I lost track of them but I last saw 71-1370 in the air force museum in Dayton. It was painted dark grey and still had the spin chute mod on it.

a10Stress, I've found 71-1370 it's been moved to Langley AFB to be placed on a stick but, as you can see from the above posts I'm still looking for 71-1369.

71-1369 is still located at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Rome NY, being used for EMI testing. I should get some photos this week sometime and will post them here, thanks for all you guy’s inputs!

Basically the cap on the end of the fuselage was removed (or never installed) and a bracket for holding a parachute in a canister was installed for spin testing. A10stress can explain it much better than I can. I've got a pic of it somewhere. I remember wondering why the A-10 had a tow hook on the tail when I first saw it.

a10stress, when you're in the reply screen look above on the Format line of icons, the 7th one over is the image tags. Click on that and place the URL of your image between the tags...be careful there are no spaces between the tag(s) and the URL.
