Hmm, maybe I will get a chance to Fly the HAWG? Get my Physical and Package done next week.

Will see what the Reseve and or ANG has in store.

...and just what is untrue here? It's not talking about referb but the Hog-up program, so please point out the bad info.

"Wing upgrade adds 8,000 flying hours to A-10"

Nope, it doesn't. Go talk to your maintainers, see how much time you buy with the WS-23 inspection or the Hog-Up wings. The answer is somewhere between 370 and 3700 hours. Look at the article again, they have 56 wings for 245 aircraft...how does that work again? Plus, you might get a refurbished wing or a new wing. The refurb wing has its own problems to deal with. Hog-Up covers the wing inspections, fuel cell corrosion, landing gear, and wing attach points, but doesn't add 8000 hours to the lifetime right away. It could eventually, but it is awarded in increments by passing various inspections. And those inspections must be managed and scheduled in and around the flying schedule, deployments, paints, washes, and other scheduled maintenance.

Coach, I'm deeply involved with the WS-23/referb/Hog-up program here at Hill AFB and all the point you have made 370/750/1500 hours are for referb wings, WS-23 INSPECTIONS only. When the true Hog-up wings start being put on the aircarft (first one finish this month) they will be 8,000 hour rated. The only thing is the first test wing has not finished it stress testing in TX. (about one year from now) so even the Hog-up wing can only be 1,500 hour rated until the tests are vaidated..then they will be 8,000 wings.

All the other work was going to be done as the aircraft came through Hog-up but because we are behind on Hog-up wings the work is being done on referb/WS-23 aircraft now so when they come back for a Hog-up wing only the wing will have to be replaced.

The 56 wings are to prime supply and take care of the aircraft which have failed all ready. After that when a wing comes off an aircraft it will be routed through the Hog-up program and turned into a Hog-up wing and placed into supply to be issued to the next aircraft so we don't need one for each aircraft.

You need to talk to the maintaince chief or OIC and get the whole scoop on the difference between Hog-up, referb wings, and just a WS-23 inspection.

So why do I send aircraft to Hill for Hog-Up if we're not doing Hog-Up yet? All we're getting back are jets that need another trip to depot, aircraft that we need to babysit and aircraft that become problems when it comes time to generate. Maybe you guys need a better marketing program because the message isn't getting out to the field. But I will take your advice and speak to my Chief tomorrow and report back. Thanks for the info.

Coach, you are right the program is in bad shape but getting better and yes most in the field don't know what's going on with Hog-up or even just what Hog-up is.

As you know the Hog has been under-funded for years and it's caught up with us in a bad way but Depot is trying to work through the issues as best they can right now.

I have a good power point show on Hog-up if you would like it to show to the troops so everyone knows what is going on. If you ask your AFETS rep, SMO, or Maintaince Chief, one will know who I am and can give you my .mil addy. Just ask them who is the HQ/ACC maintaince Liaison at Hill.

As the former AFET at ACC for the A-10 when we laid the ground work for HogUp I would like to interject that the reason the jets are not getting the full up Hog Up treatment now is because of two key factors,
1) Engineering grossly misjudged the crack problems we had with WS23. We had planned for XX number of jets to be inspected for WS23 each year and XX number to have the upgraded wing installed. The idea being that the combination would allow us to ramp up wing production and at the same time minimize the down time so we had the max number of jets. After the engineers re-slid their slid rules they realized that WS-23 was in worse shape than they thought which drove a huge increase in the number of inspections required and a higher than expected failure rate.

2) Refurb wing production was slow out of the gate. We had intially planned on having 2 contingency wings to cover any WS-23 inspection failures, while we waited for the new redesigned wing mounts from Grumman, that we know now wasn't even close to enough wings. We were behind the power curve right from the start, because at the time we only had two fixtures to mount the center wing into. Now I understand we have 3 times as many. Depot also had to deal with the growing pains of developing all the new procedures for rebuilding a wing. It had never been done on this wing before. Some of the most mundane mindless things would take weeks to months to get straightened out. Like identifying and establishing the bits and pieces required and getting the supply chain established to make sure the little parts would be there.
Dice can tell you I was not the most welcome person when I came out to visit because I was very critical of just about every thing they did, but I can tell you that the A-10 depot has done a helluva job to keep Hog flying the last couple of years and I applaud them.
Cheers

Dice,
I'm filling in for our P&S guys while they are deployed and trying to get up to speed with everything that is P&S, or whatever they call it these days. If you have that power point I'd be interested in seeing it, my .mil address is listed on my profile here. Working P&S is a different planet than Engine tracking, not a different universe, just different planet Whenever you get a chance, thanks!

I can't get the brief until Monday and I'm on leave all next week, I will try to make into work on Tuesday and get the brief sent to you. Don't worry it's no problem because, I'm just burning excess leave getting ready for retirement (and will use the time to get my site back up) and will be in the area anyway.

You and Coach will be on my "beer run" stop for Tuesday!
