Why would they use an auxiliary pitot tube like that?

If your talking about the item right next to the AIM 9 its an ACMI pod. Its an instrumentation pod used for air combat training. Sends info back to a central location to show the "big picture" of the fight.

NO! melts in your mouth got it right. It's the Air Combat Maneuver Instrumentation pod. Kind of like a LOJAC for planes, transmits position and velocity info back to the debriefing center where it is combined with all the other planes in the exercise to be watched in "real time" (looks like a god's eye view in a video game) and later discussed and probly argued about LOL.

So, what is the difference between the ACMI and URITS pods?

The URITS pod carries the black "cowbell" that records all of the data including GPS, airspeed, altitude, bank angles.....everything. This info is downloaded after flight and can be combined with everyone else that has those pods to create the same God's eye, Pilot view, or side view of engagements. The ACMI pod broadcasts the information back in near-realtime to a facility where it can be watched or recorded for later playback.
