I have heard that on paper, the ol hog shouldn't be able to fly due to its design, but computers make it fly by making minute adjustments every fraction of a second. Is this true, or an old wives tale?

Computers? We dont need no stinkin computers!! LOL The only reason the Hog shouldent fly is cause it's just plain unfair to anything it goes up against on the ground!! The F-4 proved that ugly and glide ratios arnt showstoppers!!

Actually , the A-10 is a classically laid-out aircraft and should fly just fine, dont know where you would get that info.

The Hog has NO flight computers. It does have autopilot but not a flight control system managed by computers the way you are describing. You are probably thinking of the little gray POS has flight computers and could not fly without them. If they lose power they have a hydrozene powered generator to supply enough power to the flight control computers so that the plane does not immediately go out of control.

Don't get me wrong, I love the hog and don't doubt the plane at all! This was something I heard on one of those documentaries on tv, and it just sounded funny. Figured I could find out from you guys. The plane is built similar to a B-25 Mitchell, and it flew just fine for a plane before the age of computers. You just can't believe everything you hear! Thanks for the clarification!

The aircraft that cannot fly without continuous computer correction is the little gray POS that luke mentioned. The F-16. Designers created it to be naturally unstable, thus making it more manueverable.

this is a little off topic, but speeking of FBW and unstable planes:
The Boeing Tripple Seven has FBW, but does that mean that it has an unstable layout, or is it just for the many other advantages of Wire control, such as sidestick?
And one more question: Is it true that the F/A-22 will have
'Fly by Light' control? if so what's the advantage of fiberoptics?

777 not unstable, just a lot less weight than hydraulics and more fine control for efficiency. The F-22 FBL? I dont know for sure if it is or not, but FBL would be even lighter than FBW (but not by much after all the converters and such). The main advantage to FBL is that it isnt as affected by EMP pulses as much as FBW is.
