Hello All,
I have a question about the Avenger on the A-10. Is it angled down at all?
I seem to remember seeing on some random discovery show years ago that the main gun is angled down so that the aircraft can fire on ground targets from less of a diving attitude.

Figured this was the right place to come to find info on the A-10 - go to the source!

Thanks.

When you are in level flight, the gun is pretty much level. Dive angle that you use to fire the gun is approximately the same angle that the bullets have when they hit their target. The gun is mounted to be a point and shoot weapon, so if it has any down angle, it is exceedingly small.

I've been told the gun is angled 3 degrees down, the Maverick 7 degrees.

Actually, it is 2.111 degrees between the Fuselage Reference Line and the gun line, but what's .889 degrees amongst friends?

I'm not sure what 7 degrees you're referring to on the Maverick. Is that in relation to the FRL, WL, WCL, TL, or FP? In any case the mounting angle doesn't matter with the missile like it does with the gun. We boresight (in 'Hog terms, Boarsight) the Maverick in flight for the particular delivery we anticipate, and then wherever the aiming reference appears in the HUD, we place it over the target. The Maverick doesn't care what angle it's mounted on the LAU-117 or LAU-88, it comes off like a freight train and does its thing to hit the target. Comparing gun installation and trajectory factors to how the Mav is mounted is like comparing apples to oranges.

I’m a pretty generalized person and this is a generalized forum ( look what it says under the forum heading "general A-10 discussions" and the only way a difference of .8xxx would matter is if someone was trying to build an aircraft and use a Avenger in it… at that point (if it wasn’t the USAF) I would hope they would get it wrong.

I’m also a pretty poor speller and my grammer is not the best, I also post sometimes drunk off- my-ass are you going to start grading me on that too?

I understand you wanting to get the proper information out but to correct me on sure a minor point...was pointless.

I was quoting SwingKid, and only threw it out there since the original poster seemed to be looking for "gee whiz" information. You know, the type of information that you can walk up to an A-10 pilot at an airshow with and make him wonder if the free beer at the airshow party was worth putting up with the 'experts' the next day. The conversation goes something like this:

Walking Jane's All-the-World's Aircraft Encyclopedia Guy: "Let me tell you all about your aircraft."

Hog Driver, having heard this line 20 times within the first two hours of the gates opening, sighs and replys, "Please, enlighten me."

Jane's Guy: "The GAU-8/A 30mm cannon is mounted at 2.111 degrees down from the fuselage reference line, has a continuous cyclical rate of 3,900 rounds per minute, the tires are made at Good Year's Akron, Ohio, rubber plant, your standard issue piddle pack can safely contain 2.0 Liters of liquid bodily waste, the ALQ-131 pod actual communicates with the alien mothership, which in turn sends jamming signals to the enemy's radar, and my uncle's college roommate's father's barber's cousin twice removed worked on the Hagerstown, Maryland, final assembly line second shift installing piddle pack stowage units from 1978 to 1982."

Hog driver: "Wow."

And so it goes. Don't get me wrong, airshows are a great deal. The taxpayer gets to see what he or she is paying for, we get to meet a lot of great people, and sometimes you get to plant that seed in a kid's head that he or she may one day fly, fix, or support a military aircraft. It would be too easy if you only had to deal with young kids who love the jet because it is 'unique' (read that as ugly) looking with a huge gun sticking out of the nose, or adults who appreciate it because they saw it on the Discovery channel.

Like I said, I was replying to SwingKid's post, and I explained why. No harm intended. I know a bit of your background (I went through the FTU at Barksdale, and was pretty tight with some of the guys in phase and mostly all the crew chiefs), and you have my utmost respect for time in and dedication to service. The Hogpen site is pretty cool too. So believe me when I say I didn't mean to step on your d!@k, much less twice today.

So come on, you can tell me. Did someone piss in your Cornflakes this morning? <-- sarcasm
