Greetings from a newbie,

I am new here but have always admired the A-10.

The morning news reported that an attack on a Republican Guard "station" about 90km south of Baghdad met with heavy anti-aircraft fire and the helicopters were unable to accomplish their mission. I can't remember if they were black hawks or Apaches. The report also mentioned that Iraqui forces had about 90 tanks in the area. I can't remember the tank model either, but supposedly they are the best tanks in the Iraqui army.

I am curious if some of the folk here might have an idea of when an A-10 would be used instead of an Apache? I remember a Desert Storm A-10 pilot say that two or three seconds of fire from the 30mm canon vaporized a particular Iraqui tank from a pretty good altitude. This would lead me to believe that an A-10 could attack from a greater distance and be less likely to go down in combat. Would the Air Force ever send in a squadron of A-10's to take out 90 tanks? Is that too many for a single mission?

It would be great to gain some first hand information from those in the know, especially those who have flown the A-10.

A-10's would/could be used in addition to Apache's, as could any TACAIR platforms.

I would imagine many are.

I saw some footage of a Hog yanking and banking and chucking out flares in one of the battles in the Gulf on Brit TV on Sunday.....great to know it is yet again in the thick of the action.

An A-10 squadron could easily take out 90 tanks.

Hi, all, if you take a look at the Janes web site there is a little bit of info about A-10's being used against the Republican Guard.
The site is at www.janes.com/defence/air_forces
For obvious reasons no units are mentioned.
Hope this helps.

IF "FISH "AND "KARL" COULD TAKE OUT 23 ROCK TANKS IN THE GW1 IN ONE DAY,90 TANKS AINT A PROBLEM.
THE TASKING DETERMINES WHAT THE TARGETS AND AREA ARE.
WE HAD 148 A-10'S AT KFIA IN 91

ONLY IF THEY WOULD OF LET US FINISH THE JOB

Bacon Bits,

Saw that same footage on fox New the second day. It was first contact for the 3rd ID. Was classic flyin'...kicked out 3 flares comin' down on approch, then squeezed off 20 or 30, less than a second...pulled 'er up rolling left kicked out 3 more sparklers...scooted to the next target...Blew the lid off that T-72 Smudge Pot...Sure was pretty...

The A-10 is a fierce weapon... I just recently met a USMC SSGt. tha was in Khafji back in '91 and saw two a-10s decimate an iraqi column with 30-mikemike and AGM-65s... so the answer is most definitely Y-E-S and now since its Apr. 7 those tanks you discussed are probably already twisted heaps of metal or are abandoned.

Direct that Jarhead to Dice.

He is looking for people who have seen the Hog in action for his book.
