Just a couple of statements from the fleet, regarding the Tomcat latest performance, and how its stacking up to its "replacement"

Even with the arrival of the F/A-18E Super Hornet in the force, the F-14 remains 'the platform of choice for precision targeting'. It has longer range than the Super Hornet, and the LANTIRN targeting pod os superior to the Nite Hawk the F/A-18Es carry" [CAPT Scott Swift, deputy commander CVW-41, 2003]

And something we already knew...

"The F-14 Tomcat continues to be a premier long-range strike-fighter as evidenced by its superb performance in Operation Allied Force and the strikes in Operation Southern Watch. While the Navy provided only eight percent of the total dedicated aircraft in Operation Allied Force, the Navy was credited with 30 percent of the validated kills against fielded forces in Kosovo as a result of the superb performance of the Tomcat in the Forward Air Controller (Airborne) (FAC(A)) role. Another revolutionary feature of the Tomcat is the recent Low-Altitude Navigation and Targeting InfraRed at Night (LANTIRN) system software update that enables the Tomcat to acquire mensurated target coordinates that are accurate enough for GPS weapons, which is unique to the Tomcat. The Tomcat's "Roadmap for the Future"—a plan to incorporate significant performance improvements during the next four years, including through-the-weather precision strike capability—makes it the platform of choice for all-weather, day or night, deep strike." [U.S. Navy statement, 2000]

By the way...We have something cool in the works, for all of you interested.

Hmmm, so they are going to spend significant funds on them in the next four years just to retire them in 2011?

Something don't sound right there. Sounds like the Tom will be hanging around quite a bit longer if they're dumping a ton of money into them.

I really hope that Tomcat Association site grows like this forum. I amgonna go home tonight, scan all of my VF-14 phots and send them in. I got these great burner shots that I took at night from vultures row. I got even better ones with the camera I hid in my float-coat while I was final checking on cat-1. All I gotta say is ONE FOUR BABY !

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

-----------------

They spent 40 million taxbucks or so per airframe on 111s to upgrade them and flew them right into the boneyard.

D model Tomcats suck up 50 DMMH per flight hour. You can turn Hornets around in 1/3 or less time basically.

Don't bet the farm on Toms being around long.

So why spend the money at all Ez?

Just funnel it into new engines for the Super Roach instead.

I would also point out that at the time they were rebuilding the Varks it was totally unforseen that less than 2 years later the cold war would be over.

Those are all very important icons of the 80's; I miss them all as well.
Pac-Man, Rubicks Cube, Duran-Duran, Nintendo, Iran-Contra, the Fulda Gap, the MX missle, etc... Those were some intense things.

I love that decade but my favorite time frame is '80-'85.

And further more... oops ...just realized ...I TOTALY hijacked your thread... my bad.

MIC rocks on. As the E model Hercs and other older models are being parked at the boneyard because they are falling apart. MIC is pissing away huge taxbucks on NMD, etc.
