In the summer of '78, my Oldsmobile was timed at an honest 135 mph. Not bad for a 5000 pound sedan. We're turning it into a 1/8 bracket racer this summer. It has 228K on the clock, motor has never been touched (OK, a timing chain was preventively replaced once). It may seem funny, but on the long flat stretchs of Dakota & Montana Interstate, there isn't much rolling stock I can't walk away from, no matter how new it is. No, it doesn't "handle" in any real sense of the word, unless you're trained in maneuvering oil tankers.

Ahh fun with automobiles. Let's see if I can recall any short tales.

A reckless owner of a chevy cavalier, going by first names. Carl. Sean, a retired Marine Corps Sniper, another local named Joel, and myself, were in his car, jumping it over a set of railroad tracks, going over a section of the road thats raised for them.
Left some nice chrome marks in the road, and managed to bust open the oil pan on his car. Didn't really notice till we had it parked in his driveway.

Later on: It was just Carl, and Jon. The Jewish sidekick, no dead wieght in the back. So the oil pan was spared, but probably because the car wasn't evenly weighted. They rolled it! Luckily they had thier seatbelts on. Were "left hanging". Had to undo the seat belts, and land on the top of thier heads.

More tales of reckless driving. Jon and Tim. driving Tim's car, to see how fast it could go, they were both looking at the speedometer. Heard & felt the car hit something, looked up, and saw a mailbox & part of a wooden post hit the windshield.

Jon, Tim & myself, again with Tim's car. Outside a convienience store. Tim outside, I was in the back, Jon tried getting out through the drivers side door, from riding shotgun. tripped the emergency brake, and the car rolled backwards. The open door scraped another locals jeep. His jeeps paint job was fine, tire got a ding in it. Tim's car had a nasty dent from the door bending backwards. Jason, the owner of the jeep said "Hard as a rock. Uhhhh!"

Got more. But it's late, add those other tales of death defying a littler later.

1981s rebuild Pam was only 4 at the time. Had 130,000 miles on the block at the time.

428 short block with 427 heads and intake! That is how the "KR"s (King of the Road) were put together!

I'm never going to be able to compete with the sort of cars you guys' post about, but that doesn't stop me enjoying your posts .

I did have a tricked up Rover 3.5 V8 (based on the old Buick short block I think) a few years ago but middle age and bills got in the way and I now run around in a VW Passat 1.8T.

My first job was with Hertz as a delivery driver. That was like road racing and getting paid for it. Here's a fun thing we used to do…

Kangaroo Car - This only works with a stick shift

Get something small and nippy with a very low 1st gear.
Put it in 1st and let it roll along at idle.
Reach under the seat and lift the seat slider bar so the seat can move freely backwards and forwards.
Stamp on the gas.
The car rockets forwards and you slide backwards.
Your foot comes off the gas.
Engine braking kicks in and you slide forward.
Your foot hits the gas pedal and off we go again.
Keep going until something breaks or you throw up…

It's called Lime Gold or at one time it was. I sticker was $5,600 but I got it for $4,100 and there were four others on the lot. Could that got them all for less the $20,000 and a AC Cobar for $6,500! Times have changed you can not touch a AC for less the $250,000 now!

FERRARI Mondole Vs PORSCHE 928S....

First off, for the skeptics, i SWEAR the following events are true and completely accurate...

Bright red, super sexy and zipping along at about 80mph i see the prancing horse logo on the ass end of a 2003 Ferrari Mondole(i think) convertable ahead. I see this from a few hundred yards back and stab the pedal, hitting about 110 to close, i downshift into 3rd and give him a nice LOUD engine braking rev as i slide by at about 90mph in the right lane.

The traffic light up ahead is red. I can see in my rearview(checking pre-emptively for any local constabulary) that several cars have it floored to catch up to witness the event up close for themselves. How often do you even see a Ferrari and a Porsche flagship in this position on the streets of America....let alone lining up on the pole at a red light? Once in a lifetime maybe?

I get to the light first, and my heart is pounding. A Ferrari!!!! WOW!!! Like a deam come true, a chance to drag my Shark against a bright red Italian masterpiece!!!

Got him scoped in the rear view, and 10 meters before the light he slaps on his turn signal and pulls into the turning lane!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Well, he pulls up next to me in the turn lane and i chat with the fellow until the light turns green and he turns off, exchanging compliments about our fine European sports cars.

He asks what year my 928 is, and i tell him it's an 83. He asks "V-8, right?"

I tell him, "yeah, 4.7 V8."

He says, "That's sweet".

I tell him next, "I really like your car, it's beautiful. I would have liked it much better if you weren't turning, but i still like it lots."

He just gives me a shrug, compliments the 928, "That car looks immaculate, like brand new, you keep it in beautiful shape. Take it easy", and turns off as the light turns green.

What a total bummer. :(

I fully expected to get my ass handed to me, but who cares? Who can honestly say they had the chance to drag race a Ferrari in a Porsche flagship on the 4th of July unless it was planned in advance?

I go to my barbeque(telling everyone who will listen about the encounter), and about six hours later on they way home i had to settle for a pretty radical sounding 92' Rustang GT 5 speed. Gave me a really good run until about 80mph(i had him by half a length from the holeshot the whole way to 80), and i just started walking away, getting off it at about 110 with a 4 car lead. Ran him three lights in a row, same result. He was STUNNED when i told him the car was 20 years old. Seems his 347 stroker motor cost him $5000 bucks installed just six months ago. :)

I will probably never forget the adrenaline rush coming up to the light with that Ferrari looming in the rearview, feelings like that just don't come along too often. Was still a lot of fun smoking the Stang though. :)

I wish i had my camera! At least i had a passenger along as a witness. ;)

AC Cobar with Mr. Carroll Shrlby

Back in the 1960's Shelby American, Inc. produced the legendary Cobra. With its 289 cubic inch Ford powerplant the Cobra dominated on the racetrack and won the FIA World Manufacturer's Championship. Later with the introduction of the awesome 427 S/C the Cobra dominated public streets.

Oh Ferraris and Porsches you do not what to touch this one. LOL....

Gimme a 911 Turbo. The new ones are sub 4 seconds 0-60, and 4 wheel drive to boot! Only cost 150,000...but that's about what a authentic AC Cobra costs. ;)

I actually have my eyes set on about a 1980 911T. I see em on ebay sometimes for as low as $10 thou, and they're still in the low 4's 0-60.

BTW, talking to a fellow that knows Ferrari's today, i have been informed it was most likely a 414horsepower Modena. The Mondial(which i thought it was) is no longer made, and it turns out my 928 would have likely put a whooping on one of those anyway. Apparently by Ferrari standards they're dogs.

600k was the cost for building that prototype.
they plan to build 10 cars. don´t know what they will cost.
you´re right, too much money!!

but think of this pure understatement. the same car, perhaps not in yellow but in black or silver.
nobody will realize what car it is till.....wroooooooom....it passes by you at 200mph..!!!

Homer,

Nice little TT, they drove it on Top Gear here in the UK a while back. They said it was a bit of a handful.

Bugatti Veyron. That's what you want. 0-186mph in 14 seconds…

BTW, seeing as we know there are at least two folk with 'normal' cars in this group (you and me) what about starting a new thread so we don't offend the guys with real muscle cars.

I was thinking about "What can you get with a middle aged mans company car allowance.."

Or

44hollowpoint,

LOL!!!

...and i´m not even married!!! (and i don´t plan anything like that!)
having a girlfriend seems complicated enough for me at the moment!

my boss´s got an audi a8. he told me that i just have to sell enough, than i have the free choice of cars.
problem is he says what is "enough"!!

Excellent, we call your bosses targets "Rubber Goal Posts". He can stretch them to where ever he wants

A few years ago when I still had money I test drove '98 S8. That was something else.

I tried to sell my soul to get it. But when the big man downstairs valued it, he only offered enough for a tank of gas, let alone the car I should have been a good boy...

I love German cars. I feel a new thread coming on "Top 5 cars, Cost not an issue". Do you recon it'll fly..?
