6- Horton Wingless

Wingless 1951 = 2pC flying wing; two 225hp Jacobs and extended driveshafts; span: 40'0". Not truly wingless, but essentially a highly-modified Cessna UC-78 with a more airfoil-shaped fuselage than wing. Although this innovative protoype flew successfully, no backers were attracted, and the project was abandoned, with the plane eventually being deliberately burned.

having seen the aircraft, I have to admit, I was kinda stumped on them, as most are before My time, for a second, to the un initiated eyes, the convair YB60 could easily be comfused with prototype B52.

I have to say, the production version with the airliner style side by side, as opposed to tandem arrangment of the production is far nicer looking. It would be good to compare the two aircraft.

for number four, it looks like a the model before the B-52, what's up with that?

Dear Abby, I joined the Navy to see the world. I've seen it. Now,
how do I get out?

YB-60
http://www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/research ... /b5-44.htm

The YB-36G was designed as an all-jet version of the B-36. Eight Pratt & Whitney XJ57-P-3 turbojet engines were mounted in four nacelles in an arrangement very similar to the Boeing B-52. The USAF authorized Convair to modify two B-36Fs (S/N 49-2676 & 49-2684) in early 1951. Although the -G was similar to the basic B-36, there was substantial reengineering done including a completely new 37° swept wing. The design was eventually redesignated YB-60 to reflect these differences. The first flight was 18 April 1952 and performance was better than the B-36, but was greatly inferior to the Boeing XB-52. The YB-60 never entered production. The second prototype aircraft was never completely finished and both YB-60s were scrapped in the mid-1950s.

Homer blew it! #6 is one of two BOEING B47Bs that were converted by BOEING to turbo prop/jet configuration in 1956. Renumbered as XB-47D. Almost as fast as the pure jets but for what ever reason didn't go into production.

oops! #5 is the BOEING XB-47D! #6 Is the one and only HORTON WINGLESS X-26-52. Based on the major components of a Cessna UC-78 it was re-built by Lynn Johnson, a Boeing engineer in the early 1970s. He used 1952 data from William Horton who first built the aircraft and flew it a few times but had directional control problems. It was basicly not successful.
