F/A-22 Drops JDAM Successfully (Posted: Tuesday, September 14, 2004)
[USAF News Release, Sept. 14, 2004]

Washingon - An F/A-22 Raptor flying at 30,000 feet dropped a satellite-guided 1,000 lb Joint Direct Attack Munition, successfully hitting its designated ground target on Sept. 2, 2004, at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.

This developmental test marked the first complete mission demonstration of the Raptor's air-to-ground attack capability.

"The F/A-22 will be able to conduct both air-to-air and air-to-ground attacks when it reaches Initial Operational Capability, currently planned for December 2005," said Major General Rick Lewis, Program Executive Officer for the F/A-22 Program.

The F/A-22's transformational combination of stealth, supercruise, advanced maneuverability, and integrated avionics provides increased first-look, first-kill capability against enemy aircraft and next generation surface to air missiles.

YF-23 Has Been Pulled backinto a Testing, and May very well be the Replacement for the Mudhen.

If I dont return to Lochead, I may very well go to Northrop on this Program. Some fascinating technologies in the 23 Design that is not and will not be present in the 22.

That's going to be quite an undertaking, cleaning out 13 years of bird's nests and rattlesnakes from those museum pieces. A lot of time and money would be needed to get one flight worthy. It's a puzzlement though. What is the logic for this idea? A big UCAV, maybe? Is it a DOD or NASA project? You know, we have an airframe that's a hanger queen (ship 4004) in better shape than the YF-23's. I've been anxious to do something with it. I was thinking of a two seater EW or Wild Weasel, but I guess a zero seater would work too. It makes work for the working man. Can we get in on this boondoggle, whatever it is?

I forget where but I read the YF-23 was being considered for a UCAV. We always said it was too advanced for it's time back in the mid 80s, maybe its the right time?

I know, I know.

I prefer to stay with the Eagle instead of Raptor because it's our national symbol.
Plus, it looks like its existence is as secure as the almost endangered specie.

I wonder if it was that modified 1000 lb'er with the enhanced energy warhead that equals the 2000 lb'er.
