....Driving the wife home from work this morning. The car Blew the #8 sparkplug out. Got the car home (gotta love the v-8's ) Been chaseing an exhaust leak for most of the summer. Typical routine, New exhaust, new gaskets. Same thing Nasty power robbing exhuast leak. Guess i know now where it was from.

This afternoon. Father and son project, removed the hood, Strut tower brace Cold air kit, Fuel Rails/Injectors ( i love air tools). Took a flashlight and peaked down the Hole. What did i Find, It sure the hell wasnt threads. Possibly scared piston. I dont think it could handle anymore detonation...It lived a good life...getting groceries.

Hmmm....IVe contemplated doing a helicoil, but being its a 96 Mustang GT with a 145,000 Miles. Even if I swap heads its still a turd.

Option A: replace the heads ( go 99-04 PI swap)
Option B: Drop in a used engine from the Junkyard (always a gamble)
Option C: Pull the Engine and rebuild a Forged Engine (gives me wood)
Option D:

They do, But only the 03+ Cobra and Mach engine is Forged.

For $5800 I could get a turnkey 01 Cobra-Transmission-CAt Pipe.

However becasue we plan on Getting more performance out of the car, and I plan on pulling the engine. I could Do a Forged ShortBlock for $3000.

But Ive learned with My other Cobra, is that When you have an old car It adds up real quick and a Turn Key is the best option. Sensors, Powersteering, A/C, Altenator, belts, Chains ..the list goes on. the Turn Key is the route i may go. But you have a Car that is only Capable of X amount of horsepower.

I may also see if i can find a 03-04 5.4L DOHC navigator Engine.

This weekend I will Pull the Engine. I had planned on Doing this as a Winter project anyways. looks like I get to Do it before the Snow Falls. Stary hunting the Junkyards for a 5.4L DOHC

ohhh, I wish I was there. I would go with a crate engine, you can find compainies that make good ones, you don't have to buy from ford. Then you know what you get and you can control what goes in the engine.
that's one of my dreams, after I finnish college. is to build an engine from the block up for my mustang. by then the old 289 will be running close to it's end. the whole thing will be in need of a quick restoration. but that really depends on what I'm doing.
but I'd do the crate engine.

It is a Good deal for what im getting it for. The Eaton is not the best Roots Charger on the market. Both my 03 Cobras had them on them, and simply switching to a kenny bell unit produces 110 HP more from the Stock 400. Today that Car puts out 725hp SAE 690 RWTq

When ever you run a High Boost car it is always best to have Forged Internals, Porting of the intakes, and serious FUEL Pressure. IF the Engine under high boost ever gets a Lean it could detonate and destroy the motor. (Knock) this is bad for any engine.

Currently on my 03 Cobra I have 2 Pumps and 80# injectors With a Regulater Block.

The Engine above comes with 30# injectors which are good peak to 400HP. The internals are also non forged and that is the safest HP rating to take it too. After that you need to seriously consider the Forged PISTON/ROD/CRANK/ARP stud rebuild.

The benefit to the Roots type Blowers is that the Intake Manifold Flows very high CFM, Also would need to consider rebuilding the heads for Higher Rev Springs, Cams, and performance Valves and seats.

....in todays gear head news....

UPDATE: Bought a 01 Cobra Crate engine today. Should have it on the 22nd And have the swap done by the end of the weekend. Good news is that I still have my Forged Shortblock and Blower from the 03 Cobra (I swapped to a blown 5.4L)

If you guys are interested i'll post the how to pictures during the install and Rewiring of the harness splices to work with a 96GT Computer.

Heres the New crate Engine:

And I don't know about everybody else, but I'd be interested in pics during the install.

the sad part is that it's just a matter of time before that engine is dirty again.

We got the Engine Dropped in and the Drive line/transmission bolted up as well as all of the accesories..

All that is left is the Coolant Crossover sensor tap and the Fuel rail modification.

Thanks For Dropping by Wif and M&M.

That one wide engine isn't it Mudd? I helped put one in a Cobra Kit Car a few months ago. Damn near didn't fit. We got it in with about 1/4 inch between the footboxes and the heads. Very tight.

Check out day eight. That's where the install pics are.

Yes the Cobra DOHC that i put in is pretty tight, about 1.5 inches on each side of the strut towers. and about 1.5 inches in front of the firewall.

Looked at your friends FactoryFive Cobra kit car. The engine he was placing in their is the GT SOHC which is the one i pulled out of the wifes car. They are 240-260HP stock add that too a light Factory 5 kit car and that baby is going to be a rocket. with full length headers and an o/r midpipe and CAtback exhuast, you could easily see 280HP, add a ATI intercooled p1sc-2 Supercharger and bring that baby up to around 400HP.

Forge the internals and you can join the 600HP club

When are you getting your Kit Car Hogmender?

I'm pretty sure he's keeping it stock. He's having problems getting it starts though. The PATS system is really wreaking havoc. He gets it to turn over but no fire. Been 3 months now.

I should be getting mine shortly after I get back from Korea next October. First I'll need to buy a house and get settled in. Then I'm looking at ordering it.

Where is he located?

I know several people that are across the country that could look at it for him. Their are several sensors needed in order for the computer to allow it to run. I can also havea Custom Chip made to turn off the insignifigant ones.

you can email me at socal3d@yahoo.com .

I have an SVT TECH here and we are going to be doing allot of these modifications together in the future. In fact im lining 3 of them up right now.

Mudd he's located in Houston now. The car is currently in the San Fran area with another builder. Check out the last 3 days of his build site. That'll pretty much tell the story of his problems.

I emailed him the other day to see how things were going. This was his reply:

PATS has been my personal nightmare for 6-8 weeks. It remains the reason my modular car won't start...and we're basically done, once the car starts. Even the body is painted and ready for install...bloody engine.... This issue alone prevented me from finishing the car in 30 days as originally planned.

At this point, I'm convinced we simply had the wrong key all along. Dealers don't want to reprogram the whole mess because it's not in a Ford anymore, and they're kind of scared of the mess of wire crammed into the kit chassis. Independent locksmiths refused to reprogram it because they think all the parts might be stolen, nevermind the receipts I have for them.

My builder and I tried a Tweecer, which claims to disable PATS, but that was a failure. Support is essentially non-existent for the product (their forum is a joke compared to the guys on ffcobra.com. The Tweecer made things marginally better (fuel pump came on), but still no fuel injector activity or spark. Therefore, still no start.

We finally gave up. The ECM has been shipped out to a tuner who is going to reflash the whole thing and rid it of PATS, secondary O2 sensors, and so forth. Also, I sucked it up and ordered a custom engine control harness and a Ron Francis chassis harness. It'll be nice and clean compared to that donor disaster of a harness, and didn't cost much more than I suspect the modular diet costs.

That's that. I'm sure he'll get it running. It's really a matter of getting past the PATS system from the Mustang wiring.

Saturday Update:

Friend Stopped by today and we got the last Gremlins worked out. They weren't really Gremlins mostly a couple wiring errors that was my blunder.

Another importantant note is not to try and start the engine for the first time on Low Octane Gas, in fact the gas tank was so low, and sitting on jacks that we thought we had a fuel pressure problem. We even dissasembled the uniiversal regulator, and blew out the fuel rail for any possible debree. Turns out, we were not getting fuel to the pump. I was seeing butterflies for a bit. Heath and I had to laugh.

With the help of a little starting fluid the engine cranked up and just needed a bout 20 minutes to flush out any assembly lube and fouling in the Brand spanking new engine. In fact the block had to cook off all the machining coolant and build oils that were external to the engine.

Heath Hooked up the Specialty 4V Modular Madness Swap Chip and his Ford Scan Tool and everything checked out well.

DRIVING:

I'll have to be honest I was pretty nervous, I havnt drove a car in 32 days since the original 2v engine Blew up. The First noticed Event was Me Chirping the tires out of the Driveway. I didnt realise how well the New Clutch and the Torque this 01 cobra puts out. She engaged allot earlier than i was used to on that anemic 96 2V engine. So with the Tuning the Driver needed its own tuneup

We took her for a easy drive allong a mountain pass and it was detonating a little bit, and He saw that on the scan tool, I still had old 87 Octane in the car, so we headed to the gas station, On the way was a 3000 GT Mitsubishi. We were behind him at the stop sign, and it was really comical because his License plate cover had a tag that said " I make civics my Bitch" I had to point that out to Heath , we both laughed. I so wanted to exact my revenge on imports. But we were still tuning and i need to be grandma for the next 500+ miles for the break in period of this virgin engine. I bought a full tank of 91 Octane and She started coming together on the road. and we did a few slight aggressive accelerations from a street light. She definately is a totally differnt car, The Sound is unbelievable with the BBK H Pipe and the Magnaflow Catbacks.

The sound of a unrestricted and tuned 01 Cobra Engine is an adrenaline rush, I was pretty damn impressed, I looked over at heath, and he just slightly smiled, like he knew what this thing will become later in the job. He said, oh it gets better, the Car is just learning itself, Talk about a bonus!

Heath was beginning to get a bunch of calls and the car was tuned up, Hes had a bunch of other customers to help out today so we cut it short. I was staring at the mountain pass i wanted to go run and he was staring at his watch... We both wanted to go play.

Their is an ace in the hole though with this project. I did it with a Group of guys with very thorough experiance from Project race car guys to Certified SVT mechanics to Tuners that have the basis of previous swap projects and the Super tuner guys that worked with Modular Madness to develop this unique Chip and Setup.

Lastly I want to thank #8 Plug (96GT SOHC) For blowing out at the worst possible time stranding me for 32 days and For some fellow Cobra Swappers, and the many others that coached my spirits through this Swap scenario. With out your guys support, I probably would of cut my losses and bought a car i would of been disatisfied with. I am just totally amazed at the differnce in this car. And it is just my daily driver.

8:00 PM

Driving to Wallmart for groceries.....butterflies, adrenaline rush, slight anxiety.....Praying nothing else breaks on this car.....

One light to go.....Mitsubishi Eclipse...... Some glances, I try to ignore it. But the O/R H and Magnaflows are taunting the rice.... Light goes green and i slowly edge forward the eclipse is holding formation.....I look over and he starts taunting me with some jumps of his car, i look back to my gauges..... No red flags popping up..... I rev slightly and i hear the Eclipse spooling up, and I stomped on it, oh crap, im in to this now FIGHTS ON FIGHTS ON! We leave the pack of cars behind us and he is fading real fast..... We get t o the next light and I get in the slow lane. It pulls next to me in the fast lane, and the two kids are leaning and gawking through their window.. Maybe their looking for gauges or something, Satisfied, they start taunting again. Im thinking the cops are going to be barking in my ear if i dont knock this crap off.

Light goes green and they launch, im just idleing along.... Laughing, then i romp on it again and pass them from a 30 mph Roll. I am easily 2 car lengths or more ahead... i slow down and signal to turn into wallmart parking lot.... Now im a total nervous wreck now. I just killed this Eclipse without really knowing my car, and im worried becasue im supposed to be babying her. I parked. sat for a minute, but i had to leave again, so i drove around through a secluded section of the Burbs.... 30 minutes later im finaly calming down. Pull back into Wallmart, Half a tank of gas is gone, car is running fantastic, I had a bunch of looks from people in traffic and in the parking lot.

Something is definately differnt, Lots of attention i didnt expect. Secondly that 30 days of misery and asking for favors for the routine tasks of taking the wife to work or getting groceries, the wait for parts, and the help of Friends to get this car back on the road so I could handle my buisness. I was at a peak of hell there. This powerplant in the car has totally exceded my expectations of what i thought it would be. In my mind, i was always thinking, about the parenting stuff, getting kids to scholl etc. Just dependable transportation. Im just blown away, I ve got a caged Demon in a 96 Gt, a car nobody respected, and is going to get me much excitement in the week and year ahead.

WOW, my whole attitude has changed in the course of 4 Hours. I was grinning from ear to ear strolling through wallmart, apparently people noticed my overly positive attitude cause people were talking to me in line, etc... Totaly unreal.

Killed:
90's Eclipse
90's Probe,
handfull of hondas
A couple turbo diesels that used to smoke me literally. (****ers)

All this on a 4 mile drive to Wallmart to get Groceries. I feel like a Predator minding his own buisness

Today was a Good Day!
