I know that about 10 years ago, or more, there was an effort to turn pointy nosed aircraft into A-10's by mounting the massive GPU-5 30mm gun pod on a centline station. I'd even heard that an F-16 could carry one on it's centerline. Can anyone direct me to a picture of such a feat, or is this one of those urban legends? I know the gun pod did exist, and there was a move to have them carried on the A-7D before they found they had a problem with the wing spars. Another problem with the A-7 was that it has no Centerline station so the pod had to be carried on the inboard station of the wing which caused some serious yaw when fired. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Lil Hitler,
I'd been there a couple of days ago, but the pics don't really so the gun pod. Asside from the major typo, "provided with a strengthened wing structure for anti-tank weapons such as 7.62 mm min pods" I mean if the wing of an F-16 can't take a 7.62mm mini gun, it should be grounded. It is an interesting story though. But I'm really looking for some good pics of the gun pod.

If I remember correctly, the Syracuse unit only flew one or two missions with the GPU-5 in GW-1.

Actually each of these planes are carrying the Pave Claw pod but it is hard to see.
