After some searching on my own, I need to expand my search engine (that's you guys). Looking for info on the P-47 &/or P-51: Anyone know or have a source that tells how many rounds/gun and/or the length of the ammo belts for each gun?

not my area of expertise but:

http://rwebs.net/avhistory/history/p-47.htm

"Armament

The four .50 cal machine guns in each wing of the P-47 are secured in the gun bays to Republic-designed mounts. Front mounts are conical-shaped and the guns are locked to these by rotating the locking ring of the gun bracket assembly; the rear-mounts are locked by simple levers which are part of the rear mount assemblies.

Ammunition of more than 350 rounds per gun may he carried in the bays just outboard of the gun bays."

One of the sources I have here with me at work (U.S. Fighters by Lloyd S. Jones) says of the P-47:
"Armament consisted of either six .50 cal. machine guns with 1602 rounds total or eight .50's with a total of 2136 rounds."

And of the P-51:
"Armament was six .50 cal. wing-mounted machine guns with 1880 total rounds"

I wouldn't take this as gospel. I have another less reliable source that says different. It's hard to get to the bottom of things sometimes. By the way, how many rounds does an A-10 ammo drum hold? (Just kidding, take it easy on me)

Thanks, guys. My interest is in the phrase "The whole 9 yards". I recall reading somewhere that this surfaced in WWII as meaning all the ammo in the plane was used; but now I can't find the reference and am wondering if I just think I saw it. Hence the interest in calculating it myself. Hey- it's a holiday weekend, things are a little slower!

For each gun, or for all combined? The question remains- How many .50cal rounds (+links) per foot? All this math is starting to hurt...I need a beer!

Probably about 8 .50s linked per foot(just an estimate).

The P-51d/h's inboard machine guns have more ammunition than the two outboard guns.

30MM sorry I had to run and was off for a couple days. And the flight manual says on page 8 , section titled Armament and Protection ; "Eight .50 Caliber Machine Guns, maximum loading 3400 (425 for each gun). Desired loading : 200 roundseach with 8 guns; 300 rounds each with 6 guns. Of the 8 two guns and their amunition are alternate load. "

That is the whole armament and protection paragraph. Soory to disapoint. I can scan it and try to send it to you if you want.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

I got a better idea, ifin you feel comfortable about it. Send me your home addy on my email and I will send them to you so you can scan or photo copy as you wish. I just ask for the obvious care. They are old and the P40 Warhawk one is in less than great shape but they are all there. Just return them to me when you are done. The history major in me just has a problem with not sharing good original source documents with people that want to see them. They are yours to read just send them back when you can.

I can put this one to bed.

It was actualy used by Frank when quoting for the carpet for our downstairs hall which is 27 foot long.

For historical completeness the full quote is "Do you want me to price for the whole nine yards and do you want delux underlay and gripper rods?"

Hope this helps your research 30MM...
