The last post got onto the topic of airliner testing (cos I took it there ), but it got me remembering an old programme (one of a series of about 6) I saw about the development of the 747.

I'm sure I heard one of the test pilots (quite an old guy) saying on the last test he rolled the 747 over the heads of the Boeing VIPs etc.

Is there any truth to this?

I think this is what you may be referring too, 44:

Thanks 30MM,

That's made the pieces drop into place.

That test pilot (I'm sure he was part of the 747 programme, hence his appearance on the programme) was introduced as the only pilot to have rolled a Boeing.

I jumped to a conclusion and thought they were refering to a 747.

I wonder if it would be possible?

I'd love to see the aftermath in First and Club class as the execs and their champagne go flying ...

Well, what's-his-nuts that rolled the 707/135 said it was a safe 1G maneuver so as long as you have the altitude and the speed....it seems possible.

You might be a "Bulldog" if: You bend over and grab your ankles when you hear: "EXERCISE, EXERCISE, EXERCISE!"

His name slipped my mind. But so have a lot of other things.

Tex JohnsTon!

My great uncle was an engineer and designer for a large number of Boeing programs and knew Tex personally, as well as watched him do the barrel roll. Has an autographed painting of the event in his living room.

You can barrel roll anything so long as you can maintain 1 g through the maneuver. They have film of a CH-53 doing one.
