well this is all moot had the airforce been able to build the nuclear powered bomber in the 1950. They got very close to doing it. But never could solve the little problem of what would happen if the bomber fell out of the sky.

Unlimited range, high speed, and well a little mess on impact after pilot error.

"When was the last time the US Navy suffered losses on the scale that the Royal Navy endured durring the Falklands?"

"The big problem is FOD. If you are operating a jet, you have to be concerned about the intake. Even the A-10 with it's high by-pass engines, mounted way up in the air, and the intakes overlapping the wings, can be FODed out. Just the nature of the beast. Operating from a ship makes it easy, but the Marines don't want to be tied to the boat. They want to get out and play in the mud. So for them, I don't think the Yak nor the F-35 will be the ultimate answer. We need a design with the intakes up high, sheiled from the ground, and with FOD screens that can be used at max thrust. Do this, and you have a viable bird. Without this, you need to loose the jet engine and go with something along the lines of helo's or the V-22."

The Jarheads have such a beast. It's called the AH-1Z Super Cobra. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

With a Longbow radar it can even do fleet air defense better than a Faulklands era Harrier(A lot better- what Harrier can carry 16 radar guided AAMs and coordinate the mass engagement of as many as 128 separate targets simultaneously?)....LOL.

Lets be certain were Talking Air to Ground and not air to air. The radar is not longbow. The radar is a subseries and is not Mast Mounted it hangs on the Stubby, and can only see X amount of degress forward with a sweep to the tailrotor. the Second Helicopter carries its Radar on the opposing Stubby. and or they have to hover and rotate the helicopter 90 Degres to see on the blind side, which is great for the Surface-Water antship tasks and or Terrain masking.

air to air is taken care of my Aim 9L and also Anti Radiation Aim 9 R. They are working on a System to mount 7m's. But this is seperate funding. Talk about a low level Bitchslap on a Mirage, Flogger, Frogfoot.

A Good Friend of Mine (retarded marine Col.) is the Bell Program Manager for the UH-1Y and AH1-Z. Spent last weekend tossing beers with him in Carlsbad.

OK thanx for the clarification on the function of the Cobra 'longbow'.

The MMS mounted Longbow radar of the Apache (supposedly, theoretically , actually- pick one) gives full 360 degree continuous coverage and can prioritize, distribute, and guide as many as 128 SARH Longbow Hellfires agianst ground and/or air targets.

It's friggin' crazy.

PS: I realize a Longbow Hellfire missile is not exactly geared toward AAW, lol.

Here is another concern:

TESTS SHOW EXHAUST HEAT FROM STOVL JSF DAMAGES LANDING SURFACES: Heat from the exhaust nozzle being developed for the Marine Corps' short-takeoff-and-vertical landing variant of the Joint Strike Fighter is strong enough to damage certain landing surfaces, which means naval officials have to find ways to address the problem before the aircraft is introduced into the fleet in 2012. Officials from the Naval Air Systems Command and the JSF program office provided Inside the Navy with information about the issue and potential solutions. The problem is not expected to have an impact on the fielding schedule of the STOVL variant of JSF, according to Cmdr. Patrick Porter, air vehicles systems engineering integration team lead for the JSF program. (Inside The Navy)

Harrier has the same problem, it has a time restriction for hovering over some surfaces. It also has a nasty habit of sending manhole covers flying off like frisbees lolol.
Just for reference when the Formula 1 and Indy cars race on road courses they have to weld the manholes closed for the duration to keep the ground effects of the cars from pulling the manholes up!
Problems can be adjusted to. One of the virtues of the cold lift fan concept is that it can help keep surface temps down.

A 45 has a muzzle.
A 9mm has a bullet vent.

OK, but the aft nozzle is still hot, concentrated in a single plume, and about twice as much hot air as a Harrier engine puts out. Rolling takeoffs and landings are a good idea.
