In this weeks issue of the Air Force Times, the six finalists of proposed names for the F-35 are:
Black Mamba - Many consider the snake to be the fastest and deadliest reptile in Africa. The Netherlands suggested the name. (Way to go Dutchy)
Cyclone - The Cyclone was a family of radial piston engines that powered World War II era aircraft. Today, the Canadian military is buying a helicopter tagged the Cyclone.
Lightning II - The first Lightning was the twin engine, twin tail Lockheed P-38 World War II era interceptor. Lightning II was nominated by the Navy and Air Force.
Piasa - A fierce bird from Midwest Native American legends. The name, pronounced "pie-uh-saw" was suggested by Denmark.
Reaper - By itself, Reaper doesn't have much of an Air Force history. "Grim Reapers" was the name of the 423rd Bomb Squadron during World War II. Many units have played off the Reaper's deadly and ghostly reputation.
Spitfire II - Spitfire was a British-built World War II fighter, but Army Air Force pilots flew the planes from airfields in Britian and North Africa. This name would let the Air Force reinforce the idea that it fights as a coalition partner.
The Air Force Chief of Staff General Michael Moseley has the final say on the name but will consult with the Marine Corp and Navy service chiefs before making a final decision.
There is also info in the article about how the official name gets changed by pilots and maintainers. For instance, the F-16 went from the Falcon to the Viper anf the A-10 went from the Thunderbolt II to the Warthog.
