Another Google Earth sighting. Check out Edwards AFB, the southern airfield just north of what looks to be an older, (non-stretched C-141). There is a small white bird with what looks like 2 wings, 2 sponson like tails with a high elevator like the old OV-10, and a center fuselage.

At first I thought it was that Virgin space plane, but the pics of that don't jive with this. It looks a little like an OV-10 with an extra wing. I've ID'd almost all of the rest of the birds on that ramp including the red B-57 just aft and north of the C-141, but this one has me baffeled.

Its clearly a Burt Rutan design. If I had to guess I would say that it is rutan's proteus.

Rutan also built a tandem braced wing ( two wings, in line, one forward one aft ) cargo aircraft. It was subscale but large enough to be manned the two wings were connected by pods. Might be that, might not.

I think the same as M&M and boomer, it looks to me also as that plane. But mine question is: "What is that doing there on the airforce field as a civilian plane"

The Air Force and others contract out a lot of stuff from Rutan, the cargo plane for instance was for a medium lift hauler for STOL delivery to troops. If the AF bought it I guess they can park it wherever they want lol.

Dang gents, I think we're closing in. After I did some looking for Rutan, I first thought it might be the Voyager, (the first bird to fly non-stopped and non-refueled around the earth that took off and recovered at Edwards), but on it the fwd canard wings stopped at the end of the tail booms. The one on the ramp has canards that extend well past, and the Voyager now lives at the Smithsonian.

But I did find this:

Pretty close to the same configureation.

OK, now I've found it! It's the Advanced Technology Tactical Transport. Produced by Scale Composites and it is a Burt Rutan Design.

http://www.scaled.com/projects/ATTT.html

Nice read here and even mentions the fact that they did draw on the Rockwell's OV-10 Bronco for the design of the tail.

SCHWEEEEEEEEEET

Thanks Mark, your recognition of the Rutan Design got me down the right path. You Rock!
