Hello all. I'm a new member. I'd like to thank you for the site. I've been a visitor and an A-10 fan for a long while. I really enjoy some of the perspectives expressed here. It gives me an idea of what it takes to be our best. I wish all of you the very best.

Some time back before school, I started bulding an 1/8 scale A-10 RC model from scratch. The wingspan is approx. 8ft. I picked it up again in the last year (kids grown) and have made amazing progress on it. This model is looking very nice, even unfinished. I'll be taking some pictures this weekend and will post to give an idea of what's inside.

I'm now getting ready to cover and glass it. What I'm missing is information about NAV and strob light operation. I'd also like some advice on a particular plane that I should use as a guide for numbering, features, etc. I figure that there is a plane or two that stood out in operation over the past few years. Any and all help is appreciated.

What kind of info about the lights operation do you mean? Like where the lights are?

Nav lights are standard for any American aircraft, red on the left, green on the right and white on the tail. These will normally be on during flight. One strobe on each wingtip and one on the tail, flashing bright white at a rate of about once every two-three seconds.

Thank you for your comments. Much appreciated.

I should have been more specific about the lighting. I have a great book that details placement of the lights but nothing about operation and some placement details are lacking.

From what was said, the NAV lights are steady and the strobes flash every 2-3 seconds.

I also see that there is a NAV light aft. Some pictures appear to show two lights, others show one. Is is just one? Is is white?

I see an anti-collision light just behind the canopy. Is it correct to assume it is red? Does it flash or does it \"circle\" like a police light? Is there another on the botton of the aircraft? If so, where?

Any other lights that I should be aware of?

Where can I find pictures of aircraft 175? Any particular history that I can read up on? I love reading about the pilots and the aircraft.

The exterior lighting system on a hog is a freakin nightmare. The nav lights can be steady or flashing. They also can be bright or dim, it all depends on switch settings.

The light behind the canopy is white and there's also one underneath (fwd gun bay access), same color, they are fixed lights and don't rotate.

Stations 2 and 10 have exterior lighting on them (inboard side, forward).

There are Electroluminesent strips on both tails, behind the canopy and the wing tips.

Then there's the covert lights..think flashlight with dead batteries..total of 8 (or is it 10?). They flank the upper fuselage light on panel F-54 (the white one behind the canopy), the Nav light on the tail and the fore and aft positions on the wing tips. They are contained in small metal tubes about the diameter of a 20 gauge shotgun shell.

Lighting is controlled by different switches on different panels and the left throttle..yup, the throttle (called the pinkie switch) as well as the weapons load. Some lights won't work when others are selected. As an example, you can't select covert and strobes at the same time, don't know why you'd want to but it has been tried.

If you're striving for accuracy your best bet is to get up-close to a hawg and, now that you know what you're looking at, make a lot of notes and drawings.

Thank you Old Chief. Your summary is most helpful. I'll most likely pick a selection that would be recognized at an airshow but I do have the ability to provide sevela selections as you mentioned.

I have many pictures that I've taken of the hog so I'll look at the places you have mentioned for details.

I'll be posting some puictures today of my \"project\".
